How about a sextant instead of a spyglass for new characters? I know I'd use that a lot more considering UOAM as opposed to looking at the moons for combinations that I'd never know in regards to the gates.

You can begin with a newbied sextant by choosing the 'Cartography' skill as one of your starting skills.

You can easily create a throw-away character, so to speak, on a secondary account to farm newbied items for your main characters. This is an era accurate way of obtaining specific clothing items and other newbied gear, although it was typically done with a friend muling for you instead of multi-clienting.

I Love starting with a spyglass. Lets me gaze into the heavens on a cloudless evening. So relaxing.
