Forum signature size, what's the deal?

Ok, so originally the image size limit for the forum signatures was 500x120 pixels, but I see friggin' huge forum signatures poppin' up all over the place. Has this rule recently been changed or is it just a miss with some forum bugs being resolved? Basically, what I'm asking is what the official word is on the forum signatures and what the image size limits actually are.
