Difference between magical and normal equips

Well, I don't mean to sound completly stupid, but what is the difference between a normal item and a magical item? I used to play on another shard a while back, but it wasn't this style of UO, not sure what it was, with all the extra stuff like ele resists and faster casting, spell channeling...etc etc.
Anyway, i came here looking to find out what the old style of UO was like, and i rather like it more, it's a much more brutal experience :
