The new silver reward system choices can be found here. Uniques are no longer available under the new system.

We decided to make this a permanent change due to a couple of things. For one, we had extremely poor records of exactly what uniques were actually given out, and we didn't want to accidentally release a second unique (this happened with the sparkle animation in ~2010). The second is that we were rapidly running out of suggestions for unique items that we would deem acceptable, which would make the chance of reissuing an already chosen unique item much more likely, and would have eventually lead to an end to available uniques anyway.

I'm sure that this isn't necessarily what most people wanted to hear, but I think that this is one of those "swallow the pill" type issues.

They wouldn't break, I've worn my non GF sandals for years doing nothing but pvp and dueling in them and they are still good

If you aren't dueling wearing other clothing it is unlikely they have been hit much. It does not mean they will not break ever. I wouldn't take a 1000 silver risk like that
