UO Second Age

Hey whats up everyone! I used to play here six years ago back when the shard was first growing to it's peak.

I loved this shard and the era accurate mechanics, and just the feeling that this was one of the few servers with an actual clear direction that everyone got to be a part of.

I hear a lot of talk about people wanting new players to join the shard now. I just want to give my two cents on why I'm not coming back here for my venture back into UO. Maybe it's just me but maybe it's how most other people feel as well... This feedback is just for your own benefit don't flame me I'm not trolling... If you have trouble with temper or with reading opinions that conflict with your own, please, for everyones sake, read no further...

#1 It's really freaking annoying when a shard gets the feeling that it has been "exhausted." Like all the power gamers and farmers have finally won and done everything possible and exploited every resource. I feel like since there is no more competition in a race to get a house or a castle or whatever therefore there is no reason for me to try to farm, or try to play at all.
UO is best when everything is fresh and people are all farming together and interacting and competing and cooperating and writing guides and macroing and it starts to really suck when all of that dies and becomes a shard full of old veteran bank sitters.


2# even if someone were to give me like 10 million dollars to play on this shard. I would only macro up a tank mage and do some duels with people on IRC. and occasionally do some RP events or whatever. I would never waste any time farming or participating in this BS economy.
think about it:
WHY WOULD I WASTE ONE SECOND OF MY TIME DOING SOMETHING UNFUN?? when there is no pay off later?? I would rather play a funner game, or I would rather play a server that i can enjoy the thought that unfun things will pay off a little later or that other players are doing the same as me and I have to compete with them to be the very best the best there ever was. you know all that junk that inspires us to play this game instead of an instant gratification game that requires no initial work to get the full experience like Chess, Go, or Call of Duty dota 2 whatever.

#3 A lot of the stuff I read on the forums makes me think you guys are really mean, or don't enjoy the game. I just don't get that this forum has a lot of cool members like chumbucket used to be cool and do fun stuff and make everyone laugh.
All I see are sell/buy threads, which is usually a bad sign.
If you want more players you can try being a little nicer to eachother and less bickering constantly.

#4 the time investment and macro investment to get back into UO initially sucks. it really stinks. It's only really fun when you are doing it with other people. It becomes competitive idk something about a fresh start on UO with everyone else is so sweet.

6 years ago when I was playing this server was growing from like 250 to 500+ players, and it felt great. Tons of people were all making their guys together, farming, and it felt like none of us had that many resources or experience. It didn't feel like a chore at all.

I would only return to this server if there was a full server wipe. That might make it fun to do the whole UO newb dance again with all the other players. However, I perhaps would not return even then because UO free shards can be a dull and tedious game, only fun for middle aged power gamers

What I like to do in UO is not extreme or crazy. I like to do a little of everything and just enjoy hanging out with the other players and developing my characters and buying a house. I think that's what most players like.


UO is like a star, the characters like me who just want to enjoy hanging out burn out relatively quickly then all that is left is a small core of players who play the game to admire their own ridiculous meaningless wealth and refresh their houses are left. These players stay and the shard never gets whiped or anything because people are afraid the shard will end if that happens. Then another shard is made and everyone flocks to that because UO is funnest when everyone is new and beginning on relatively equal footing.

I was reading a thread about the richest players donating to help new players come back to the game. I thought it was a super hilarious thread. The best thing that the richest players could do for this server is beg Derrick for a shard wipe IN MY OPINION (just an opinion pls don't flame me) because having all these possessions and monies just pisses new players off.

Yeah I know a lot of players foolishly feel like OMG i invested so much in this game I can never lose it. Well you're going to lose it all anyways don't fool yourself into thinking you invested your time for anything. this is just a game. your time in game was spent on FUN not on investment. there is no such thing as long term investment in an online game. Your pixels will get more and more worthless every day.

My one suggestion for you:
Quit thinking this server is going to re-explode with population again. Instead you should enjoy the degradation and chaos. Revel in the chaos of the imploding server. Drop your millions in the street. Let all your houses IDOC.

For the love of all that is good and holy quit hanging on to the idiotic instinct that plagues all mankind, the instinct to hang on to all of your possessions like life rafts. They are just pixels people! Do you honestly think they are what makes the game fun for you? None of it ever had any meaning, just like it had no meaning on IPY, UOGamers:Divinity, whatever all the other free shards that have petered. out.

I tried not to be mean or put anyone down Don't get me wrong please. Derrick rocks and this server rocks it's the best server out there. I just wish the circumstances were better to promote server growth.

Probably the most T2A accurate thing would be a server whipe, because none of this crap going on here is T2A accurate besides the mechanics.
This has become a mockery of T2A in every way. there is no nostalgia to be had here.

Funner is not a word. Door is where u seem to have found it. No one is waiting in anticipation of Vega having puppies to repopulate the server. The ones here find fun in what they are doing even if it is dueling in irc or what have u.

I think Delo's drunk, what he meant was In Flam Grav! I think the shard for you is one of the ones you can pay $20 for a skill ball. Wipe em! Then give them another $20 bill. I do get what you're saying though but i only started a handful of months back, I just got 7xGM not too long ago, please wipe the shard so me and any other new players to the shard in the past few months can just mark our time here to waste. UO has never been about farming/PvP/RPing/hoarding, it has always been about griefing players.

So long as there are fat feral computer nerds here that get riled up over IRC, I will play. You have to learn to make your own fun in this world, the shard is just a medium for you to do it.

It makes me wonder why he would take so much time to post this yet claim to not be interested in playing here at all. I see this as an other server fanboy taking a shot at secondage.

Down to wipe, or as I've mentioned in other posts, make a sister shard with a set wipe timer. So there'd be the hoarder server and the fun server. Just wipe it every 6-24 months (whatever the community agrees on is a reasonable timeframe). I think we could get enough donations and volunteers to help the rl infrastructure of it all if the conversation got serious about it.

Lol it's not a mockery of demands. I'm the only one who said keep the old shard and start a conversation about a second one. Plus it'd separate the population into better communities. You'd have the pixel lovers and duelers on the old shard, and then the actual game that people come to play nostalgically that would arguably be more era accurate happening on the other.
We all know you'll cry the hardest if there's a wipe, but just remember this shard will inevitably die one day anyway. The end, get over it.
Why not attempt to get some more mileage out of it while we can?

The majority of the people who don't play here aren't because of pixels, but because they like other servers and staff better. That's what it boils down to. This is a cartoon about dwarf fortress not UO. You just changed the title. Yeah that's how I feel when I play Dwarf Fortress, which is a single player game and yet is way funner than UOSA is now. Probably because you can start the game from scratch and not feel like crap.

Yeah it's fun to grief. It's really hard to grief a server full of millionaires who don't care if they lose anything and a server with no players.

That's a great idea nobody in the history of freeshards has tried. Human nature is to horde and seek safety even against all reason. Only really short sighted people don't understand that all their hording and design is going to go bye bye in like a year. It has happened to every server and will happen to this one too. Derrick is awesome but probably the reason he doesn't come here anymore is that he agrees with me that this is all so boring.

I just happened to be reading the old forum I used to go on, and I read the thread about millionairs giving money to help new players. I had some thoughts on it and so I decided to post them.

There is literally no reason to my post besides the fact that I wanted to express myself. There is no personal gain and I am not pumping up some other server, they all suffer the same flaws. If you wan't to see it as a glorified cry or whatever go ahead.

The creation has already been ruined by the un-era-accurate play styles, wealth, so few players, no newbies, etc etc.

Also, I like this server and staff more than any others, actually it was the first server i checked out when I wanted to return to UO, I even logged in after seeing it only had 120 players. But then I spent some time and got the weird feeling of wow this place has gotten weird. I saw that everyone was basically done with this shard there were just a few ultra wealthy stragglers left and I didn't want to spend my time being the only guy macroing/farming on a shard that wont last.

Yes, this shard also has a reset/wipe/shutdown timer. The thing is none of us know what it is exactly. But one gets the feel it isn't far off from browsing the forums/playing the game. And that's what drove me away.
