Gettign sheep to stay put.

I have seen various wild sheep that seem to stay in place and not wander. I assume that someone tamed them at some point, arranged them as they like, told them to stay and somehow got that to stick after they went wild again.
How do you do this?
I tried taming a bunch of sheep, lining them up somewhere, telling them to stay and then waiting. I checked on them later and they were all wandering around as usual.
