Moongate difficulties

Why are they so annoying. I haven't used them in a while and I don't remember them being this bad.
Either it doesn't take you through or it cycles between the same two for 10+ attempts.
What gives?

I remember it well, it is Era accurate to a T.
Hence recal being the most usefull spell in the game
