You must be a GM fisherman to fish up a message in a bottle, when opened you will receive a water stained SOS with coordinates to a sunken treasure chest. I would say with non stop fishing you should be able to get one every couple of hours. (you are allowed 3 accounts here so you can have 3 GM fishermen all fishing on the same boat thus tripling your chances of getting an MiB.

I saw someone stating you should get one every hour.
Not even close to correct in my opinion.
I seem to be lucky if i get 1 every 3 hours of straight fishing.
May get lucky every now and then and get 2 or 3 in that span but it usually takes hours of fishing to get one.

I merely want to interject that my Fisher has never failed to achieve an average of 1 per hour: I've gone 90+ minutes "dry", and then pulled up 2 in a span of 5 minutes; once, fishing with another guildmember, both characters were "dry" for almost 2 hours, but each suddenly fished up 2 within a very short period of time, "in a row", as it were; at least once, I've ended a 6ish-hour fishing session with 7 MiBs.

I intend no bragging, perhaps there is a methodological explanation: I fish for MiBs (and fetch-up the SOS chests) by doing a "rolling trawl"; while fishing by relative location, the tillerman proceeds "slow (left/right/backwards)".

Anyone who is doing something else, and struggling, might try that.

It's the beauty of the random number generator. While by design it is supposed to be random, in practice it can be very streaky. Bad streaks and good streaks. Over the long haul they average out, but you will have some long bad streaks & some amazing luck on a good streak. It's magnified in fishing because of how low the likelihood of success is (one bottle for very 250 casts).

20 years ago the random generators had algorithms that weren't nearly as complex as the algorithms we use today. You have bigger good & bad streaks due to the age of the game. I actually like to old style random number generators myself. You can use them to your advantage with a little bit of luck and a prayer.
