A few questions regarding UOSA!
A few questions regarding UOSA!
Hello all, I am an old school UO player from the early 2000's where I played on TDS, then Abyss, then Asylum, then Ronaldo's Realm lol. I started an account somewhere last year and had a harder time getting into it because my friend wasn't up for all the macroing, but now I'm just going to play on my own. I am interested in playing UO again and this is one of the shards that seems best for me, I enjoy the t2a era, pvp, and having a second account. However, before I start macroing regularly, I have a few questions:
1. How fast do skills gain? Is it more like the official servers, or are skills something you can gain easily to really start playing?
2. How does the population make the world feel? I mean, is it overpopulated with houses, gankers, and PK'ers, or is it big enough so that you'll spend a lot of time playing alone without encountering others? I played on mostly ~250 constant population servers where it was nice and peaceful, so jumping to 500+ on at all times might be kind of crazy albeit fun.
3. Are reagents very hard to get or are they just things you can acquire easily to really start playing? I am used to no-reagent shards, which I truly loved, but it seems like all of those are gone or changed lol.
4. Is there a macro area for new players or do I just stick to towns/hidden areas? Towns would be better I guess because the last shard I started on constantly had people killing new macroers in the macro houses.
Thankyou in advance for any help, this seems like a fun, respectable shard, no newbie item or pay to acquire ingame bs.

They're not hard to start off. They gain relatively steadily. Many new people are happy to help you out

Lots of houses, hard to place anything big without some effort. Around peak time, theres people, but you're not overwhelmed. If you want to find people, you can with ease

A patch just made them a bit harder to buy, but player run vendors have them for a mark up. I can't say how hard they are to get, cause im lazy and just buy in bulk when i need it.
4. Is there a macro area for new players or do I just stick to towns/hidden areas? Towns would be better I guess because the last shard I started on constantly had people killing new macroers in the macro houses.
Towns and houses will get you by. Join irc and /join #NEW its a guild who's purpose is helping new players. To some extent, this gives you a break with some pks/thieves (but certainly not all; i tend to at least rez a NEW player if i kill em).
Sorry I cant be more elaborate, at work. But Welcome! #NEW will really help you out if you talk to em/join them

First of all, Welcome to UOSA!! Skill gains closer to production shards, but AFK macroing is allowed here, so gains are real easy.xvsanx wrote:Hello all, I am an old school UO player from the early 2000's where I played on TDS, then Abyss, then Asylum, then Ronaldo's Realm lol. I think the population is fine for what you're looking for. There's a sufficient amount of people if you want PvP, and places you can hunt alone for some time if you so wish to. Housing is somewhat saturated, BUT there are plenty of spots for small houses, and larger homes usually sell for very little over deed cost.xvsanx wrote:2. Regs are not too difficult to aquire if you are willing to put time into it. There are also player run reg vendors that can make your life easier if you're willing to pay the premium.xvsanx wrote:3. You're welcome, and it's safer to macro in houses here. If you want a GREAT way to start getting ahead jump on IRC and join channel #NEW. They're a guild that help new players get a better start in this server.xvsanx wrote:4. Is there a macro area for new players or do I just stick to towns/hidden areas? Re: A few questions regarding UOSA!
thankyou both for the info, I will certainly join new today and work my way toward a little home somewhere secluded then
I started last night and have been macroing my hally mage and crafter with herding and eval int, I've already seen two people give up in-game saying that it's too hard to raise skills or make money, but I'm guessing they weren't willing to invest time in fishing/mining/lumberjacking
so far it seems like the best all around most stable server and I've never tried the official servers or anything close so this will be a nice change, i'll have to farm reags, get used to a huge population, get good at pvp again, and get used to classes which is the only thing I hate so far
if anyone has some tips for making gold as a beginner they would be appreciated, but i have been reading the guides and the wiki and i know the regular uo map so i'm hoping to find somewhere with easy mobs that I can kill without being pk'd lol

Re: A few questions regarding UOSA!
make a bard as your first character. 50 provoking/50 magery. I'm betting someone in NEW can get you a full spellbook for little to no cost.
macro provoking at a stable or the moonglow zoo. no cost to GM provoking/musicianship.
Macro herding to raise strength, eval int to raise int
Then you can go farm whatever you like. dragons drop decent loot and the most dangerous thing you'll face there is the pks. just get good at recalling when you see a red. it'll make you good money so you can buy regs to GM magery. A bard is a good character to have for things like t-maps once you're more established.

Re: A few questions regarding UOSA!
If helpful, use snooping to raise dexterity, works very quickly.
Re: A few questions regarding UOSA!
ah thankyou again, Ill definitely use snooping to raise dex & I made a tamer provoker as you said to start my fund raising, having a great time so far, joined with a friend just havent been able to catch anyone in new on irc yet
I have a problem tho, I accidentally gm'd herding and I need to lower it and mace fighting from 0.2 dunno how it got there, Ive tried using herding with the skill arrow pointed down, is there any quicker way? it stayed @ 100 after like 20 minutes of herding

Re: A few questions regarding UOSA!
Eh?
Dunno why you guys are suggesting to start with provo. Haven't worked the skill for a few years but I thought it was relatively simple and inexpensive compared to, say resist...
BTW, tamers are lame. You won't make much gold running a provo/tamer in the works. You would be better of making a melee/provo and using that to generate funds while you gm a tamer on a second account.
Point the arrow down and when you hit skill cap (700) it will go down

Re: A few questions regarding UOSA!
Just point your arrow down in the skill sheet and it will eventually lower once you reach 700 real skill points on your character. You can use camping for stats until then.
Re: A few questions regarding UOSA!
I'm guessing because provo raises slow as HELLLLLL and so I can start making money quicker, so far I've been macroing my guys and making a little starter money mining/chopping, I started with a friend and we're working our way to 44k for a small house but it's going very slowly lol
thanks again for all the info, I've compared uosa to the other top sites shards and it seems like the best hands down, I still hate having to have multiple characters but I'll make due, it'll be really fun once I get a full spellbook, some armor, and some income for magery. I'll be here for a long time. UO's still my favorite game ever. I started back in middle school lol.
