Question about mining

I have a question..I know I could test it out but I'm unable to get on the game until tomorrow night. using 5 shovels sounds cool, and obviously if you use the object, not the object type, whenever a shovel would break you'd be forced to retarget a new shovel.

So using the object type...how does it know you want to use 5 different shovels? Would it not atleast some of the time try and use the same shovel as the previous .5 seconds?
