Monsters retreating when they're low on hp.
Monsters used to retreat when they were low on hp, does anyone else remember this?

I do,
it was always fun to watch them run away after you beat the shit out of them.

This AI mechanic wasn't always the case.
Also, only "intelligent" humanoid types would run away.

Negative all monsters would run away when low on hp. I remember clear as day killing balrons and undead and them walking around aimless trying to get away.Slade wrote:This AI mechanic wasn't always the case.

While I'm not entirely sure if all mobs fled or not, we are fairly certain that most did. We'll continue to research this. In the meantime look for fleeing monsters soon, as without doubt it's more correct than what we presently have.

I meant that stuff like rats and snakes and mongbats would sit and take it. I could have sworn that only the more intelligent monsters would run away.Mirage wrote:Negative all monsters would run away when low on hp. But it's entirely possible that I'm blurring my time on OSI during T2A with Everquest, since I played both.

Awesome, I know there's quite a bit going on right now, but the monster AI seems to be VERY high also. They aggro on you immediately when you're within range, and they continue to aggro, almost 2-3 screens away it seems.Derrick wrote:While I'm not entirely sure if all mobs fled or not, we are fairly certain that most did. I've been making tweaks to mob inteligence in a downward direction for a while, while trying not to go too far. I'll do some more work on this while working on the flee.
Re: Monsters retreating when they're low on hp.
Curious to know if they flee on the demo? Faust?
Re: Monsters retreating when they're low on hp.
They do flee on the demo. What I found interesting though in the demo code was that specific monsters was listed with a certain flee value, which indicates that those type of monsters didn't flee. It was all undead creatures and a select few of other specific types.

I remember this, but specifically remember LichLords not fleeing.. could be wrong though

Liches and Lich Lords definitely didn't flee. If that was the case than EV's would have been dispelling left and right when they dropped down in the Lich Lord room everytime one got low and fled away. It makes a lot of sense that the demo code has these and other specific creatures listed with a high flee value where they would absolutely not flee. All of the values casted for these specified creatures obtain the same value too.
