What is the in-game text for conveying your inner monologue? In comics it would be a thought balloon. I know that actions are expressed with an asterix before and after: *sniffs* *bangs head*. Is there a convention like that for thoughts?

I want to display my character's thoughts occasionally. Something like, [Please don't ask about what happened to my robe.]

It's important to consider that the asterisks bookending our emotes are just a previously established convention. It's not like we got this rule from English class. So we could all get together and decide that putting ampersands or pipes or tildas around some text denotes a thought but that sounds unlikely to catch on. That being said, the answer to your question can be found in your distant memories of English class. An emote is a textual representation of an action. We need to state the 'action' of thought within our emote such as: *thinks this answers your question* or perhaps *hopes you don't ask about what happened to my robe*.

hmmmm! Magic of thoughts is other people shouldn't hear them. This works well in real, but for role playing in game

thoughts are a big part of it, something like *thinks he is hot* but says "good day kind Sir* :D
