50-65: Cutlass
65-75: Kryss
75-85: Short Spear
85-93: Long Spear
93-100: Plate Gloves
is what i did very cost effective per skill gain and good gains.

Don't switch to long spears. Just do shorts for a while then swap over to plate gorgets at the earliest possible time. I think I actually only made 3 different items from 50-gm.

I used up around 35-40k ingots, however my smith was also GM miner, and I smelted everything.

Latest patch now does a mining check on smelting items. Rare color items are harder to smelt now. I'm not sure if this effect the type of item being smelted... Is a plate chest harder to smelt then a broadsword?

Higher mining skill will yield a higher number of ingots when you smelt items. This has been like so for a time.

While i can't offer insight, start tracking your ingot usage so that you can give a solid number for future people looking :-)

The total number is hard to calculate considering smelting. I created an alt with 50 mining and used him (deleted after GMed smith). He ended up with ~75 mining (capped) by time I GMed smith. For me it was somewhere between 50-60k ingots not including smelting.
