Am I just lagging or is it the server?

Post by Fallstand »

Everything seems to be lagging for me for the past few days.. Dragging items from boxes to my pack. Running I freeze for a second or two every few tiles..

If it's the server I'm not complaining I just wanna know so I can stop troubleshooting my client/internet/computer. I can't seem to figure it out on my end.

I honestly don't know. I don't experience any noticeable lag. I'm in Maine the Shard is in Texas.
Some people have reported some lag, and other have reported not ever noticing lag.
It's something I take seriously and am still looking into, but I can't answer the question yet.

I finally figured out my problem. I had to load a restore point from a month ago and do some toying around but it seems to be fine now.

I experience this lag also. Very spotty and good thing about it is I never have lag death. It seems to last about 2-5 seconds at a time. But how could it be possible that some people note the lag, and the dragon or lich lord also stops, yet others don't have the lag at all?

It depends on how the traffic is directed to and from the server. Your data might not be going through the same points as the people that aren't lagging. My entire guild gets lag at the same time.

Open a command window, type in 'tracert uosecondage.com'. Look for any abnormal latency times (may take a few tracerts). You'll notice an occassional 200 ms hop where other times its ~90 ms (or w/e you usually get). Copy the abnormal tracert and e-mail it to [email protected].

For example, one of mine (cut out some of the first hops):

7 64 ms 63 ms 63 ms ge-2-1-0.mpr1.ord2.above.net [64.125.26.249]
8 98 ms 98 ms 121 ms so-0-1-0.mpr2.dfw2.us.above.net [64.125.25.134]
9 98 ms 98 ms 97 ms xe-1-1-0.er1.dfw2.us.above.net [64.125.26.210]
10 89 ms 95 ms 91 ms 209.66.99.90.available.above.net [209.66.99.90]
11 278 ms 207 ms 200 ms te7-1.dsr01.dllstx3.theplanet.com [70.87.253.2]
12 90 ms 90 ms 89 ms po31.dsr01.dllstx5.theplanet.com [70.85.127.106]
13 90 ms 93 ms 92 ms 1a.fe.5746.static.theplanet.com [70.87.254.26]
14 89 ms 90 ms 90 ms 8a.b8.5646.static.theplanet.com [70.86.184.138]

Derrick will make the appropriate complaints.

i keep getting a "request timed out" when i do the tracert. the only time i was able to get it nothing seemed to be abnormal.

1 1 ms 1 ms <1 ms
2 * * *
3 7 ms 8 ms 9 ms
4 12 ms 10 ms 9 ms
5 10 ms 9 ms 10 ms
6 23 ms 24 ms 23 ms
7 45 ms 45 ms 44 ms
8 45 ms 45 ms 45 ms
9 45 ms 52 ms 44 ms
10 46 ms 44 ms 45 ms
11 67 ms 51 ms 46 ms
12 47 ms 46 ms 45 ms

is it suposed to gradually increase like this? and i continuously get these lag spikes in game.
EDIT: derrick do you want the entire thing sent through email, or are these numbers all you need?

I am not an expert so this may be completely wrong but I believe it would gradually increase. Each incrementing number is another 'hop'. Think of it like an airline flight path. If you wanna go from Florida to California you'll fly up to Atlanta, then you'd fly to Chicago perhaps, then you'd go to calif. Servers work the same way. I am on road runner in florida so any time I connect to the server it bounces from my computer to my router, then from my router to the local hub, then from the local hub up to orlando, then probably up to atlanta, then over to texas and down the smaller hops back to the server computer. The further I get, the larger the ping, therefore I think it would increment.

That was longer than I intended and im not even sure if its useful,l ol. Oh well.

Are you using a router?

What Ronk said.

Without the addresses (ge-2-1-0.mpr1.ord2.above.net [64.125.26.249] etc.), there's not much there. I don't think those values you got tell much either.

Aye, that looks like a normal tracert, no need to send.
Do you see lag?

This was my tracert... If it's not the server, what could it be? UO used to run smoothly for me, this is bugging me.

I've reinstalled, updated my router firmware, re-loaded restore points, I can't firgure it out.

Those values are weird if you really are constantly lagging. If you only get a spike periodically, you'll need to do several tracerts otherwise you might just be missing the spike.

Also, include the addresses with the tracert if you do find a spot where it's troubleseome.
