Out of curiosity, a second shard?

Post by ultimaforever »

I can't help but to be curious if there will ever be a second shard created that will obviously need to run side-by-side with what there is now. This would give everybody a chance to start fresh (if they want to) on a new shard, and give people that might feel they missed out with the last great UO experience (uosecondage of course) a chance to compete for land, gold, status, etc... I know that I personally would love this. What would it take resources wise to create a second shard for example uosecondage2? I know this is something I would commit myself too. Maybe, this also would help keep uosecondage, or UO as a whole, from becoming stale in the eyes of some people?

That would split the population up too much. While it would be fun to wipe and started fresh, it wouldn't be good for our population.

UOSA is great as it is. We're active, populated, always got new players joining, have been around years and best of all we are secure.....our admins won't do something crazy like wipe the shard = P

I always thought it would be cool to have a SP type second shard... it would have a really small population I'd imagine

1 char per account.. but of course that means 3 characters per person

It would suck if a population only plays the new shard because it hurts the population of the original shard which could lead to less people joining

I knew somebody would bring up that fact it would be crazy etc. to "wipe the shard." That is why I specifically used wording such as "obviously run side-by-side," and even in the title I said a SECOND shard not "wipe the shard." I think that the point and meaning of my post is quite obvious, did you even read it?

I think overall it would be a good idea. I have seen it done before with success, people are not going to simply abandon their work on the original because there is a second new shard. If anything, I think that the fact the game is already progressed so far would make people decide not to play. Surely not a new shard where all things are still available. Bottom line is that people aren't going to leave the shard... because why? that theory makes no sense. it in fact would be creating a better opportunity and atmosphere for people to join.

I wonder if Derrick has thought about it? I have no idea what kind of resources it would take like man hours, money, and so on. I really hope it is a possibility, because I think it would be great.

Why not just wipe the shard we have now! (Then install SP style rules).

When it comes to a second independant shard can anybody comment on how difficult it would be and what it would take? Any higher-ups of the shard, is it something you can consider?

Would be great but I am afraid the population would not be big then.

Despite what I typed I realize you meant not a wipe, I shoulda worded it better. But IMO the biggest argument against it is that 2 shards means we are competing with each other. And it would split the population up, for the most part.

Isn't the whole fun of this game developing your characters while interacting with other players? I mean, that's what I thought.

I think it would be a headache for T2A staff to maintain 2 separate shards. I also think that it would (as previously stated) split the shard's population--I don't think it's possible to run a "side-by-side" shard without draining a significant part of the population (or a lot of playing time of the people) of the original shard. I think this means more "dead" time where not much exciting is going on, and then jumping between shards trying to find the where the excitement is, and I think that would get really old.
