The other thing you should note, is that animals get happier each time
you command them successfully. This is why you see the odd person get
off his horse, and scream "Silver follow me" two hundred times.
Spamming the horse this way works, but is annoying for other people.
As a rule of thumb, I get off my horse about every half hour of play
and tell it to follow me 3 or 4 times. Doing this I've had my latest
horse for over a week without feeding it. Either way its still really
helpful to have some animal lore.

This is my recollection of food as well. I believe pets always go directly to Wonderfully Happy after being fed any food of any type that they will eat.

That is someones interpretation of how the food mechanic worked back then and is no different than when people said you needed to eat often for better skill gain. Basically its hearsay.

No, it's not at all the same.

Animal Lore is a skill. When you use it, you see how happy a pet is. It's discrete and objective.

Feed food.
Use Animal Lore.
Repeat.

If you want to split hairs about how many pieces of cabbage it took, in this 12 year old game, and argue about it on a message forum with strangers, be my guest.

My point was that it is quite clear that one piece of food did not automatically reset the pet happiness to Wonderfully Happy.
