Just purchased my first ship and I need to know the best way to proceed to keep the boat, and my Fisherman, safe. Other than standing in the middle of the boat - I have a small ship - and having additional keys in my bank; are there any other tips or suggestions?

Never keep a key on your fisherman. Keep both in the bank. Play it safe, not sure if it's been fixed or if it ever will, but there are some sketchy mechanics regarding looting corpses that are in the middle of ships where they should supposedly by safe.

If I need to the key to get on the boat...How do I keep the key in the bank?
Can the boat be boarded at sea? Can it be locked at sea to prevent boarding? Are things safe while stored in the ship's hold? Is it a good idea to keep the key there instead of on my fisherman? Can I have my mage mark a rune on the boat so that that character can rescue my fisherman?

you can recall of the key . keep it locked, and only the bring to key once every 14 days (ideally less) to refresh the boat

Kander has come out of retirement.

I keep a key in the ship's hold and never unlock the ship itself.
I recall to my boat from the key in my bank box and then to refresh retrieve the key from the ship's hold, takes one second and I promptly return the key to the hold.
