Something odd with tinker traps

This does seem bug like to me, but usually I'm proven wrong. Let's see where this goes:
When building explosive tinker traps I've come to notice some strangeness, maybe someone can help me make sense of it. Here are a few scenarios.
1.) Put wooden box on floor of house
2.) Set trap on box
3.) Drag box onto self to put in inventory
4.) Die instantly
1.) Put wooden box on floor of house
2.) Set trap on box
3.) Lock box with key
4.) Drag box onto self to put in inventory
5.) Nothing happens
1.) Put wooden box on floor of house
2.) Set trap on box
3.) Drag box into a container on the ground
4.) Drag box onto self to place in inventory
5.) Nothing happens
6.) Place box back on ground
7.) Drag box onto self to place in inventory
8.) Nothing happens
9.) Move box anywhere, multiple times
10.) Nothing happens, seems safe to handle
1.) Put wooden box on floor of house
2.) Set trap on box
3.) Drag box into a container on the ground
4.) Use a different character to pickup box from container and place in inventory
5.) Other character dies instantly
I'm trying to make large quantities of these things without locking them but it's like playing Russian roulette when moving them around. Can someone tell me the best way to make and handle trapped tinker chests so I can sell them through a vendor?
