What happens if I murder someone with my good character?
What happens if I murder someone with my good character?
I'd like to pay a guy back for ganking my miner but my only other toon is a good guy with no murders and an Admirable tag on the front of his name. If I murder someone will all that go away? How exactly does that work?

Re: What happens if I murder someone with my good character?
If it happened last night at Minoc I am sorry, they were talking about gank squads last night at Yew Liches of all places on irc
I said that's like having a gank squad at the mines by Minoc....
(Meaning anyone setting up a gank for a solo lone player resorting to farming low level areas is pretty tainted...unless you are statloss)
They were like Good idea Archaic
You will go red for like 2 minutes after the murder and then you will revert back to blue. You will have a short term count of 8 hours and a long term count of 40 hours. Which will go away.

What do you mean short and long term counts? Sorry I'm new to the game in general, not just this server.
Re: What happens if I murder someone with my good character?
One murder does not a murderer make
You will lose Karma, in proportion to the Karma of the player you kill. Of course, if this person who killed your miner is a murderer themself, you will GAIN karma on your admirable character for killing them!
Upon killing an innocent (blue), you get a long-term count and a short-term count.
Long-term counts take 40 hours of in-game time to expire. If you have 5 or more, you will immediately become a red murderer, until you get down below 5 again.
Short-term counts take 8 hours of in-game time to expire. If you have 5 or more and you die and resurrect, you will suffer stat loss.
If you say "I must consider my sins" in the game, you will get one of a few messages:
"Fear not, thou has not slain the innocent" = 0 long term counts
"Fear not, thou has not slain the innocent in some time" = 1 to 4 long-term counts, less than 5 short term (not a red murderer yet but you've killed some peeps)
"Although thou has slain the innocent, thy deeds will not bring retribution upon..." = 5+ long-term counts, less than 5 short term (red murderer, no stat loss)
"If thou would return to the living, they would take retribution upon your soul" = 5+ long-term counts, 5+ short-term counts (red murderer, stat loss if resurrecting)
I'd also advise caution about trying to get revenge upon whoever killed your miner. It's quite likely given your questions here that they are more knowledgeable than you about the game and better prepared for pvp combat, so seeking them out and trying to kill them with your fighter might just get your fighter killed too.

Re: What happens if I murder someone with my good character?
Short term and long term counts are just variables the game keeps track of; to be specific, counts of how many people you've murdered.
Obviously, they increase at the same time (when you murder someone) but decay (reduce by 1) at different rates. Short term counts decay by 1 every 8 hours, long term counts by 1 every 40 hours.
Having 5 long-term counts at any one time (or more than 5) will make you red, which means you can't go into town without being killed by guards, and other players won't face any repercussions for attacking you.
Having 5 short-term counts puts you into statloss, which means that if you die you'll permanently lose a percentage of your stats and skills (though they can be trained up once again). You can check if you have 5 or more short-term counts by saying 'I must consider my sins'. I forget the exact responses it gives, but it should be pretty obvious if you're in stat-loss or not.
To answer your initial question, killing someone on a character that has no counts at present and doesn't plan to incur any more shouldn't affect you much at all. You'll go grey (criminal) for two or three minutes after the attack, then turn blue again.

Happens to me. I turn red for a brief moment then I revert to blue when I kill an innocent for roughly the same duration of a criminal flag timer. Maybe its when I get reported for murder.
I tend not to kill people afk.
Things may have changed since last I left though.

Re: What happens if I murder someone with my good character?
Yeah I freaked out the first time it happened to me, I hid in the old lands for a bit until my friend showed up.
I was definately red for a couple minutes. Being my first kill ever I hadn't expected that.
I am pretty sure I was red for a few minutes on my other kills too...
But then again it might not have been the kill but the reporting on me for murder that did it.

Re: What happens if I murder someone with my good character?
You might have razor highlight criminals as red, however you are only turning grey. Your criminal timer will run for 120 secs from the last criminal action you took vs. the blue target (your killshot, or looting the corpse). However, it is highly unlikely you go red (murderer) for 2 mins. You would have needed to have 4 long term murder counts, the last of which had been "macroed off" for exactly 39 hours and 58 minutes.
EDIT: For more information, you can look at this guide. If you ARE going red from your first kill, then it definitely is a bug and you should report it in the bugs section.

Re: What happens if I murder someone with my good character?

I wonder what happened then..
that might be exactly why.
I may have very well had criminals highlighted red to distinguish them from other greys back then.
If it happens now I started again I will definately report it.
I think I may have very well did what you said though now that I think back.
Good detective skills my man. It wasn't razor either it was in game options now I think back...
I think I actually changed it back when this happened

Dude you are so right...it's funny to relive this in my mind after so long
