Mining

I know it's been about 5 years since I've played but I thought I remembered most of this. I'm standing next to a forge, I've got iron ore in my backpack and my smith hammer in my hand. I open the mining menu, select melt, then target the ore. A message shows up at the bottom left that says "You can't melt that down into ingots". Am I missing something?
