I lose Karma when someone opens by boxes, but I do not gain fame?

Don't you gain fame by killing a "Lord" in the field? Why would this be any different?

I always recalled actually getting the messages "you have gained a lot of fame" etc when killing players with higher level fame than you, but apparently it's not in the demo and there is no patch note. Anyone have any screens of killing players on OSI with the "gained fame" message displaying?
