I just joined last week. It was an amazing experience to relive 1998 UO.

But lately I've noticed a group of PKs who are named after comedians aka. the Terror Guard [TG] Guild (their blue alts). I was wondering how they always knew when specific people were in a dungeon/space, and I realized that they have a ghost or an idle player constantly hiding in dungeons probably running on a secondary screen (due to the 3 account per person).

It made me wonder a few things. How many players actually play here? The stats say its around 450 per night, but is it really tons of multis? Does anyone know the real statistic?

I don't want to leave, and I probably won't for a while so it IS fun, but I just wanted to say its really lame when someone is constantly idling just waiting for a blue to come in, then they swoop in a gang of 4-5 reds and just leave right away since they already know whats up. More reds probably do this, not just these guys, but I was using them as an example.

TLDR; You should limit 1 account per IP.

They used to just charge in on their PK runs, but they got facewrecked by 10000 dragons someone had waiting for them at their gate spot one night.

Combat it with a toon hidden offscreen to show you anyone coming in.

1 account connected at a time would be fine with a lot of people, but it's a debate that's gone on for a long time

Welcome to UOSA.

On IRC there is a bot who will show unique IPs when someone uses the !status trigger. I have never noticed the amount of unique IPs being drastically lower than half the client count, but this is merely a personal anecdote and not empirical data.

A recall macro will work wonders for escaping the comedians.

While one client per IP would fix the issue you're having, so would a recall macro set to a hotkey.

Well, I'll quit if they do this. So, we are at an impasse...

Yeah, I guess it is just frustrating because they will gate in 4-5 people just to kill me and leave. They just rotate around. Usually I can recall out though.

Maybe the players that have been here around longer are bored so they resort to PKing, but IMO the player count isn't really high enough yet to justify 4-5 man raids against 1 newbie who is just doing his own thing. Back in 1998 there were reds, but there were also enough blues to counter them or at least strike a little fear. Here it seems all the reds are actually just alts for the bored blues.

Or maybe I'm just in the wrong places to see more blues. I guess I'll figure it out over time.

I can't remember who pulled it off, but it was quite funny

Seeing a blue can often be worse than seeing a red, because at least you know what to expect from a red. ;)

If you're a new player you might have better luck raising your skills and gathering gold by tackling overland spawns. Ocllo for example has a lot of spawn and is very quiet.

LOL nice pics.

Yeah I suppose I will go to quieter areas... but the areas I frequent are still pretty quiet.

But to be honest I started making my own ghosts as watchers. Sucks I have to do this to counter their ghosting.

Thinking about it more it might just make more sense to allow 1 IP per user or something and not get rid of 3 accounts. That way everyone can be happy...

IDK though. I'm new here. I did a little more forum searching and I guess ghosting is a serious issue. So if anything, please take my 2c as a view from someone who recently joined and already sees the problem in effect.

That would not make everyone happy. That would make you happy.

Well its the only logical compromise for those who want to remove ghosting.

Some people want 1 account, some want 3 accounts. Why not just limit 1 IP logged in and you get the best of both worlds and solve the ghosting issue. Or maybe this has been tested before?

Regardless this is all theory. It might be useful to test for a month or something the 1 IP soln to see if it actually makes change.

Yeah I hear you. It's a tough community choice and its hard to make smart community decisions. @BobDobbs out of curiosity which are you in favor of yourself?

Making a recall macro bound to a hotkey. ;)

You just have to get yourself established to where death really doesn't mean anything.

It is not that I don't empathize with your frustrations, I just think there are things you can do on your own to overcome this particular issue.

Unlike some, the fact that staff strictly adhere to an ideological goal gives me confidence in their integrity. To stray from it would diminish that and that I suspect is why staff doesn't.

Good point. I guess being a noob and "threating" to leave doesn't help things either ;)

I'll give the macro a try for a while.
