Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
Creature Respawn
Creature respawn on this server is too long. Yes, larger mobs should take a while, but animals should be respawning in 5-10 minutes. Nightmares used to average 1 hour (45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes), I think White Wyrms were 20 minutes, and Frenzied Ostards were about 15 minutes.
I've been doing a lot of organic taming and I am absolutely starving for animals. I roamed the entire area north of the orc fort in T2A and an area that big still had a lot of down time due to slow respawn. I moved into the desert north of Pap recently, and I'm covering nearly the entire area waiting for respawns.
Spawn Accuracy
For the most part, you've done a pretty good job. There's plenty of random filler animals (cows, pigs, etc) where you expect them. But there's also a lot of spawns most people just don't notice since they have no use for them. I know this is a big job and it is hard to find information on this sort of thing.
Moonglow - My home city, spent many hours here as a newb
Things that don't belong: Bulls, Great Harts, Orcs, Grizzly Bears, Grey Wolves
Things that are missing: a few snakes (west exit from town)
I didn't check the graveyard, but a Lich should have a rare chance to spawn there along with the random crap undead (skeletons/shades/etc).
Route from Yew to Vesper - (Location of my first house)
Things that are missing: Grey Wolves, Dire Wolves (I spotted some on the south side of the road, towards the shrine), Ettin+Orc camp spawns
I have a distinct memory of having an Ettin+Orc group spawn on top of me as a newb and watching them loot my very first set of city runes.
Delucia and northwards
The area behind the healer's hut is supposed to have bull+cow camp spawns (1 bull, 4 or 5 cows) and sheep. The bull+cow spawns extend to outside of the city to the west.
If you head north from town, past the undead fort, there's Great Hart+Hind camp spawns and Orc+Orc Lord with prisoner escort camp spawns.
"The Ruins" map
This was a hotspot when I was working on my second tamer in Late 1999 or very early 2000, I don't remember why this stopped being good (was it because of the LoS check? I think that was much later...). You could teleport up onto the ledge and tame snakes until you puked. What made it awesome was if you left them tame, eventually the crap undead in the area would kill off your tames for you.
T2A Swamps map
There are Giant Toads everywhere in the green areas of T2A, *except* where they should be. There should be 2 Giant Toads in every swampy area other than Hopper's Bog (which should have 4 bare minimum, I didn't spend much time here). And they should respawn fast. Fast enough to make it worth your while to tame here along with snakes and strong mongbats. There should be Silver Serpents in some of these swamps (west of Pap for sure, definitely not the one west of Tera Keep), but I don't think I've seen any in T2A at all.
I spotted some Reapers in the swamps north of Papua, and those absolutely should not be there. Also spotted a Frenzied Ostard here, when there shouldn't be.
Outside Fire Dungeon map
I don't remember Fire Elementals here at all. I mention on my site that Lava Snakes and Lava Serpents are new to the area, so I am reasonably positive they were not part of T2A era, I'll have to dig through my old stuff to get an idea of when they were added. Hell hounds absolutely did not live out here.
This is where I got my GM, so I spent a lot of hours here. In the 3 possible routes south from the entrance, there should be enough animals that you can tame forever as long as you killed them off. If you were exceptionally fast, then you would have a free path to start pulling toads and other stuff from the swamps. The only thing that should be a nuisance here are Efreets, and there was only 1 that spawned anywhere near the entrance, but it was easy to lure away.
The small ledge on the north side of the entrance, there should a couple spots if you step one tile away from the ledge where you can initiate taming but they can't breathe on you. I was barely able to initiate taming by standing on the edge, I had to make them dance around a bit to get them to walk to the right spot. The ledge on the south side could also be used for taming in a similar fashion but generally wasn't safe because animals would occasionally respawn there. I couldn't initiate taming at all from this ledge.
Fire Dungeon
I didn't spend much time on the upper levels, but the bottom level is supposed to be full of Hell hounds, and that's the only area they spawn in T2A. There should be so many hell hounds here that they can take down a Nightmare that's on it's own. In fact, this is where I lost my very first nightmare after I died (lag? I don't remember now).
Nightmares maps
I've overheard tamers on this shard claiming there are only 3 locations for nightmares. There should be 5. I've personally tamed at 4 of them often enough to get very accurate boundaries of their locations. The last location stayed blocked on my shard right up until they moved mares to the Keep. Their spawn location is characterized by having Reapers (*always* Reapers), Ratmen, Orcs, Ettins, and other shit spawn nearby. It is very very different from the surrounding areas. You could probably still find out where they used to live on today's OSI shards if they haven't messed up the T2A spawns.
Horses and Ostards
This feels close enough to how it worked on OSI shards that it probably isn't worth changing. The green strip north of the Ophidian lair could also spawn horses as well as forest ostards.

A conversation during character creation:
Me: Do you think I should use my old character name..?
Him: I think you overestimate how famous you are. I doubt anyone remembers you anymore.

Re: Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
Here's the spawn map stratics was hosting back in 1999: http://web.archive.org/web/200001181723 ... spawn.html
This doesn't cover the T2A map or dungeon areas, and it doesn't really mention the general overall spawn that most people didn't pay attention to, but it is still a really good guide. I can't personally vouch for all of the spawns he lists, but the ones I do know of he has listed very accurately. It would definitely be a good starting point for cleaning up the old lands spawns.

Re: Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
RunUO's spawn system is inaccurate to begin with here.
Hoping someday Batlin will eventually dig out the code that handles spawns in the original code from the decompiled demo to get a better understanding of the way it actually worked and build from there.

Re: Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
Well, I do know that the Nightmare spawn map from Napa Valley is accurate. I personally tamed them on Napa Valley. I also know that the respawn of said creatures is incredibly slow compared to what it really was like. Nightmares re-spawned quite quickly in fact. As soon as you took one off the server, it was pretty much there by the time you ran out there. Idunno, but the 5 Locations on the map that was posted for the mares IS accurate and should be changed. We currently only have 3 and they are incorrect.

There's de-compiled code? I'd be interested in reading through it sometime.Faust wrote:RunUO's spawn system is inaccurate to begin with here.

Batlin has done an amazing job at creating programs that deobfuscate/decompile the uo demo so it's possible to see all the original OSI code:Sexy Smithy wrote:There's de-compiled code? I'd be interested in reading through it sometime.

He has also created a separate version of the UODemo called UODemo+, which can allow for custom code/files to be used, making it possible to be a GM, leave Ocllo, etc.

Re: Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
Does anyone know if there are any plans for Dark/Silver steeds or the small silver serpent?

Re: Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
I'm not sure the small silver serpents were live during 1999. And the horses definitely weren't.
Your best bet to see them is if Derrick decides to throw them into an event or something.

I know there is at least 1 dark steed on the server already.

Re: Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
Do you really want a legendary animal to start spawning ? It would then stop being worth your time and it would be just a big waste like the current mares are.
It's nice to see one running around and go wow....but after a week of spawning it loses it's WOW factor and becomes Meh.

You would say that considering you are one of few people to actually own one.GuardianKnight wrote:Do you really want a legendary animal to start spawning ? It would then stop being worth your time and it would be just a big waste like the current mares are.

Re: Creature Respawn and Spawn Accuracy
Well let's look at our rares here. They were a real prize in the later ages of UO but worthless in this age.
Once you talked the owner out of a pot of wax in later ages of UO...you thought you had won a real prize. If they had spawned it a day after you had just spent everything on it, you would find it a bit frustrating and stop trying to get any rares in fear that they would spawn the next day.
Besides, if derrick spawns a ton of em, it'd be era inaccurate and a ton of people riding purple horses everywhere would go against the non divinity look he is going for. Same reasoning for all the NO answers i got when trying to pick my unique rewards from trophy points a while back. Can't have anything that makes us look bad.
