Hire NPCs

I hired an NPC for "4 days", which the wiki said was 8 hours (2 hours * 4)

I started macroing about 3.5 hours before server down and when I came back my wrestling had gained from 90-GM, but my character was dead (meaning I had to take a second lot of stat loss ><).

-If 1 UO day = 2 UO hours, surely he should've still been in a state of hired?
-For what reason would the NPC suddenly turn on me if he was still in a state of hired? This has never happened before and I've macroed combat skills more times than I can count. Obviously the macro ran for at least 2-3 hours before the NPC turned, if it allowed me to GM wrestling

I've already ruled out the possibility of being killed by a player somehow getting into my house, and I was not standing near a wall.
