Blade Spirit Resist Bug

Magic Resistance Bug Fix Dec 22 1999 7:02PM CST

* The exploit that allowed people to gain magic resistance using blade spirits without taking damage from the blade spirits has been fixed.
This was fixed after the Nov 99 cut off date, therefore should be part of the shard ^_^

I think the era accuracy policy is something about not allowing "game-breaking bugs" such as the dupe, or the magic resist bug.

I see, another one of these exceptions to the general rule of Nov 99 unless it's something someone down the line doesn't like.

Game breaking bugs are one of the few exceptions that are weighed here. The shard has allowed the current magic resist exploit involving the guard line to exist here. However, this bug should be considered since it did in fact take up a lot of resources to keep a character healed that was constantly poisoned from walking voer the Bladespirit. This old bug works the same way the energy field bug did back in the day. Walking over both a Bladespirit and an Energy Field at a higher Z axis would allow resist gains to be possible. The way this mechanism works would have to be extracted from the demo to weigh the game breaking option.

Ahh yes the old energy field bug too!

Sometimes E-field would do damage, it would make a cool noise too.

Was it low resist that caused it to do damage?

Energy Field used to be a damage spell in the very beginning(similiar to firefield) until they turned it into a wall like object that was impassable. I'm assuming they left the old 'move over damage' code in there somewhere and this should be able to be found somewhere in the original code. However, the only way you could actually walk over one of these fields is by elevating yourself above the Z axis(on top of the field itself) causing you to take damage.

Resist is based on spell damage making it quite clear for the reason why the Energy Field bug was possible.

This is planned for proper implementation as well. It is understood that the EV (and BS) acted as a field and should curse as well when walked over as well.

i used that bug a lot on osi, it took 4 of us casting/healing and a ton of regs to make it worth while. Still took many hours for significant gains (which was super fast back then)

I remember this bug was fixed right after Dr. Twister had posted it up on his UO site. I thought you had to do something like cast reactive armor on yourself.

i brought this up ages ago and was told i was a crackpot :s

I think it might have been the T2A manual that said "EV should curse, harm and poison anyone who walks through it". This was def the case at the start of UO:R. One thing I don't remember though, it EVs just poisoning on every hit, but that might be something that was changed after UO:R

Them hitting for poison and curse should be happening on the demo if that is the case.

I don't personally remember them ever hitting with poison or curse myself.

i brought the EV cursing up as well and was told i was a foolish fool, then it got implemented, someone made a post about it, and it got pulled from the server..

They definitely used the curse spell, positive by pushing through it but I want to say I recall it being on melee as well. This was incredibly aggravating when you would buff to 120 str, and then your own EV would quickly drop you back down to 90 str.

Very irritating.

I have a strong recollection of the one time this affected me on OSI, which was running through an EV in brit GY by mistake (in an attempt to flag someone grey). I got cursed/poisoned and hit the floor pretty fast. I was really surprised because I didn't expect it. I wonder if they should be poisoning/cursing on "hit". The manual (or whereever I read about it) said "anything it touches", which would indicate on hit, but if that was the case then it was patched at some time or another (before or during early UO:R days) ;/
