I remember you were able to train lumberjacking by hitting people with an axe (of course gaining swords as well) It would raise slow, but still raise.

I have been doing this and I havent gained a single point of LJ.

This was a UO:R era feature due to the lumberjacking bonus for fighting with an axe.
