"What's in a name?" - A lesson in Arithmancy
HW Due Date: Friday, December 18th @ 11:59pm EST

Objective: The academy calls for all new students to learn more about themselves and their connection to the world before beginning the challenging tasks to come. Students will calculate their "character number" and find hidden kinships between their number and other people, places, and things.

Arithmancy: a form of fortunetelling based on mathematical calculations of names and numbers. Arithmancy involves assigning numerical values to words using a table like below:


Part 1: Find your character number.

• To find the "character number" of a name like "Marfu". Translate each letter into a number. Marfu would be 4+1+9+6+3
• Add up the numbers. Marfu would add up to 23.
• If the number is above 9, add up each individual digit. Marfu's number would be 2+3 = 5.
• Marfu's character number is 5.

Part 2: Finding persons, places, or things you are connected to.

• Marfu would have a magical kinship to any person, place, or thing that has the character number 5. For instance, Tokyo and Pittsburgh both have a character number of 5. These would be places Marfu should consider living in. Perhaps it is just coincidence, but my family is from Pittsburgh and my wife is japanese.

2. List 3 persons (not in this thread), places, or things you should have a kinship to.
