I am all for the new system of having gates open earlier before events. I think this is a great change, and is one I have supported.

I question, however, the long pauses in between sequentially scheduled events. If an event is going to begin immediately after an event that is in progress, 5 minutes or so should be a good buffer. The current buffer leads to too much down time in my opinion.

I agree, this was one of the reasons for the shorter 6 minute gate opening, becuase the time setting "before"="between" in the current system. This is something i can look into enhancing.

Would maybe 10 mins be better in the meantime?

I would say yes. It's great to have three fun events in a row, unless you have to wait 20 minutes in between each!
