What are silver coins for and worth?

ok i read and learned about the trophy system which i think is pretty cool , but i dont understand what people are saying about the silver coins? are those worth trophy points or something? people keep saying they are worth trophy points or something i dont understand what is what. also how do you get silver coins i heard something about the ctf and dd events hand them out??

Silver coins are rewards for double domination and Capture the flag events. You get them when your team wins such events.
The common consensus is 1/2 a trophy point per coin.

I've been meaning to put up a post about the silver coins. I had intended to do some of the implementation of the new system before an announcement.
The scheme here is that we are hoping to create a new item vendor to be placed in one of the event join areas that operates on silver. We'd also like to have the vendors redeem the existing trophies for silver. This will cut down on item count quite a bit, and make redemption's much easier for players and staff; while still allowing players to keep their more prized trophies.
The idea has been a redemption value of two silver coins per trophy, and the prices on the hypothetical vendor would reflect those values. We may adjust some of the costs of reward items as well though when the vendor is created.

The vendor has yet to be created due to derrick having many other more important things to do. I'm sure he'll get to it some day.

Turning thousands of trophys into a couple hundred stacks of silver, serverwide. Would definitely reduce item count, and add a nice feature.
I am looking forward to this change.
