Cutting up a deathrobe to bandages came in with smelting and unraveling in late '99.
I personally remember cutting up deathrobes into bandages at the time this was introduced; it may have been changed shortly after, but i would say this is certainly not a very efficient method of cloth production. My personally recollection on this is one bandage, but as per the unraveling mechanism, it would be dependant upon your tailoring skill.

Recollections can however be grossly wrong, so any further information on this is appreciated.
