I really didn't think housing was so valuable as there are so many houses around for the amount of people you see out and about!

Just keep in mind that houses can be redeed and sold back to vendors. So this is the absolute minimum you'll ever get a house for:

Anything larger than a small house will have a relatively steep premium due to demand, as will small houses in prime locations. So keep this in mind when deciding on what you're ready for. Smalls can be placed anytime for cost of deed in 'meh' locations, but anything larger generally requires waiting for a house to fall and hoping you place first, or paying a premium to someone else that placed first.
Many people WILL co-own you to houses free of charge, and indefinitely though. So if you're hard-up for a place to drop some loot, just ask here or in irc.
