The problem I see with this is twofold... First I stopped playing LONG before this and know from experience that this sort of action was taking place before this FYI. Second, I'm pretty sure that sign was there before 2002 as well, although I am admittedly less sure of this then the actions of OSI to prevent players from blockading.

Just so we're clear here. I blockaded back on Chesapeake. The boats went bye-bye. I went back to just leaving a boat on mountain. When virtually the entire mountain had boats covering it, my boat went bye-bye, as did all boats periodically (not every day, but when things got to be too much). As a result, I would move my boat every couple of days to avoid losing it.



Because we don't have boats covering the entire mountain, that's not the same issue, but I'd be willing to accept action against this if it leads to a better solution. What is an issue is when people blockade. People need to seriously consider why this, one of the few things OSI took action against without a player requesting help, was against the policy/guidelines. As I said before, they did their best to prevent blocking any area of the game with items. It's why they revamped housing in the beginning. They could not make the same type of change to the boats and were left with the only option of implementing policy.

Found a little, but not reliable, bit of information. Apparently, the enforcement of boat blockades was not always consistent (from GM to GM).
In the face of complaints of imbalances and such, the OSI dev team has bravely gone into hiding and won't even answer important questions like "is it legal to blockade islands or waterways?". Given that some GMs say yes and others say it is a bannable offense, we need to know.

Found another google group posting from a player discussing blockades. To sum it up, the player blockaded to protect himself from "telekinesis bug" which allowed other players to loot his boat. Once he blockaded, a GM was called and made him get rid of the boats.


I think it's safe to say that OSI chose to prevent these blockades (although some GMs may have turned a blind eye to it).


The real question is 1.) What's the reasoning behind the policy (previous publishs removed the ability to blockade with houses, not so easy with boats)? 2.) Does the shard need a policy that opposes blockading areas from other players?

We need to keep in mind, as the server population grows, and even doubles, issues such as this will become more frequent, and more extreme. Increasing populations in general seem to make problems uglier and more obvious. Things that are an occasional nuisance now can potentially grow into things that are game-breaking.

I Agree with you Duke ... and if we let it go to long, when they finally do decide to do something about it, I don't want things to be grandfathered in because they where there before the rule was set, this needs to be dealth with ASAP

I think we're going to have to wait to see someone do something epically annoying with a massive fleet of boats before anything happens.

futile .. most people don't sail into towns ... they have recall runes that keep people from restircting Access to other players

Can you please for the sake of this poll descibe what consitutes a blockade.

If players are able to pass the blockade using valid game mechanics, is it still a blockade?

I think this is a very good point. It may be prudent to define a blockade for any and all instances. While new issues may arise, it at least gives the players and staff an outline to make as clear a decision as possible.

Right now, the only way to bypass the boat blockade is by gaming the system. In the case of animals, you're talking about players being able to teleport beyond and/or find another route around (however if they become so populated it could potentially cause a stability issue).


For the purposes of this poll, I suggest the definition of blockade should be limited to instances where normal gameplay (i.e. no exploits or unintended outcomes needed to get around the blockade) would restrict the access of players and/or causes client/server stability issues. [There may be a need to further define a blockade as the use of items, creatures, or characters to restrict the access of players...]


Furthermore, precedent has been set for half of the definition. It's simply a matter of whether or not we want to set one with the other.

Since I started playing UO 1 month after its release and well into its 7th year before I finally gave up on OSI.

But yes, there was a sign posted; and yes OSI would delete offending boats that did block off areas. I remember it very well. Since I was one of those that had a boat deleted LOL
