I think most everyone trust Derrick's vision.

If he decides to keep guild chat then I think everyone will understand.

Derrick even stated that he thought it might be a bit disastrous if CTF and other events were removed "At this point". That indicates that it was probably not a good idea to begin with, but we're keeping it for the sake of keeping the players who grew acustomed to it and would quit if it was removed. At this point it would be a bad idea to remove maybe?

Well, I think that is the same for Guild Chat. We've had guild chat since the shard started, now is the worst time to remove it especially with the large influx of new players joining lately.

As a new member, I really like guild chat. It has been very helpful in making me feel like a part of the game, and my guildmates invite me to do stuff with them often through it. And I do have IRC, but going back and forth certainly isn't convenient. The era accuracy is cool and all, for the most part, but sometimes following conversations above everyone's heads makes me go cross-eyed.

In summary: I like guild chat a whole lot, mm'kay. ;_;

Pretty interesting thread. It has certainly gotten me thinking about things.

Here's a couple things that i think have been missed:
  • UOAM Chat operates just like guild chat with less restrictions on who can participate, anyone can make and share a private channel.
  • We have been running a dedicated UOAM server for two years, which many players use (40 online right now)
  • The UOAM chat will have the same potential for SysMsg trapping as the current guild chat does.
I do not believe that guild chat "bots", if they are even a legitimate issue are going to be effected by the removal of guild chat, and it was never my intention in suggesting the removal of the guild chat system to target this. This is purely an accuracy issue. And the party system dwarfs this issue of guild chat.

While i feel the guild chat is primarily an "interface" mechanic, the party system is more of an in game mechanic and definitely needs to come out. Guild chat to me represents the difference between having to tab over to irc or another messaging system to type instead of typing in game (or using the in game chat); but at the cost of not being able to see prior messages after they fly off your journal. And if installing UOAM you've got the exact same features as guild chat, albeit for only one client.

Personally, I prefer IRC. Although it's a stretch of a comparison, staff can communicate via a guild chat system, and we rarely do, it's too easy to miss messages.

I really don't buy most of the arguments about this being a death nail for the server, or that it would effect new users so much; these arguments are made every time a change goes in that effects anything. (not to mention the rallying cries against events as well, which i agree need to be in a separate thread)

The question of guild chat should be strictly judged on accuracy, but i do agree somewhat in this particular case that it's a minimal and debatable accuracy concern, relegated more to the realm of interface than to a true mechanical issue such as stat locks, parties, lil statues in the dungeons that summon fire elementals, etc.

UOAM system messages cannot be 'trapped' or 'caught' with Razor.

This was verified by Kaivan just a few weeks ago when Blackfoot brought the issue up.

The type of system message used by UOAM is the same that other 3rd party programs such as EUO use that cannot be detected by the server and is purely client side.

afaik, euo can communicate between scripts just well without chat in client

but EUO is illegal to use on this shard, so it would make people using it that much easier to catch and ban.

I don't see what the big deal is, the in-game chat system is pretty much perfect.

There is no other way besides guild chat to link up a system message unless it's something like snooping.

Catching EUO users doing this would be a piece of cake if this were to be fixed.

More the reason to implement ways to catch and prevent its use as well... so double bonus.

I keep the in game chat really wide and skinny at the bottom underneath my entire uo client window (its how i have irc most the time too)
It works on big monitors really nicely

UO chat is trash, don't make me laugh. First of all look the text is overlapping each other and there's no way to keep it from doing that, everyone is going to have different dimensions on how they have it set up IF it was used.

Everyone is going to continue to use IRC.

Not everyone has bit monitors.

And not everyone wants to see IRC all day, I know I sure as hell don't.

I play UO, all of you that sit in IRC all day really need to find something better to do.

Here's some examples of things that are more fun than sitting in IRC:
1. Play UO
2. Go outside
3. If you're bored of UO, smoke a joint to get your inner-child back and then login and have fun.
4. Eat magic mushrooms, it never fails.

The UOSA community is more than just inside the UO world. You being on these forums now is proof of that.
I disagree completely that people shouldn't get in irc. Irc has many more people than a guild chat, who play the game in many different ways. If people learning the game think that guildchat is the only global communication method they will really be missing out on a larger portion of the community.

I feel that completely ignoring the UOAM option, which is just like guild chat, and easier to set up than IRC for private communication detracts from your argument.
