Poison

Post by Kraarug »

Here's something about poison. I was wondering why, if with mearly 6 mana and a 2nd level cure spell, why OSI would bother calling deadly poison 'deadly'.

It seems the effect would be the ADDITIONAL damage every 3 seconds the poison inflicts upon it's target. 10 to 40% according to this era source.

Any thoughts? How does poison work here on UOSA?

That is very interesting. Poison on UOSA is a fixed percentage based on another damage study that is no longer linked on old Stratics, and was sadly never saved.

This is a very good reference, linked from the url you provided:
http://web.archive.org/web/199911040027 ... sessay.htm
This does not accurately reflect our poison damages.

Derrick,

That second link,

the poison essay, is something I tried to use as a reference against the latest magery curing forumula. Specifically, the essay says :
Curing Poisons

Finally, one must also know how to cure poison. Generally, the Cure spell is sufficient to cure Greater Poison and below, although I myself am almost a Grandmaster Mage, so that tends to help a bit. ;) The most powerful potion is difficult to Cure even with this high of a Magery skill; in my personal experience, I've had to cast Cure three to four times before eliminating a Deadly Poison in someone's system. This spell seems to be somewhere between Deadly and Greater Poison in terms of effectiveness.

Cure potions seem to be the better alternative, since there is no chance of disruption, such as there is when casting spells. Also, a Greater Cure will cure even Deadly Poison with only one quaff. A regular orange potion that was found as loot on an Earth Elemental was able to cure the 5th level Poison inflicted by a Poison Elemental.
That passage has apparantly been 'over-ruled' in our vetting process in favor of the demo code and a UO:R Patch Note.

*******************************************************************
So, if that over-ruling stands then I would like to submit the first URL

http://web.archive.org/web/200002072321 ... ctic1.html

as the reference for deadly poison strength pegging the HP Damage and 'tick' @ 10-40 % of remaining health and every 3 seconds. For greater it's 10-15% of remaining health every 3 seconds.

The date of the page is May 1999 and I'm assuming that the demo code would confirm this information.

This could be the missing element concerning deadly and greater poison, putting more teeth into the poison and alchemy skills that the most recent magery cure patch removed.

While we are at it, I would be very interested in the treatment of poison from magery. What poison level, according to the demo, is poison inflicted from magery assigned. Lessor poison? Regular Poison? Certainly not greater or deadly.

might be stupid ... but wouldn't the quote about 5th level poisons make this essay out of era?? and thus invalid?? not sure if poison ele has always had "lethal poison"? but i would think it wasn't even in game yet ??

Poison Elementals have a level 5 poison aka "lethal" It's after deadly poison in strength that you cannot replicate through crafting. Silver Serpents, PEs, Terethian Avengers, and Ophidian Knight Errandts have this right?

I'm not positive cuz I haven't used poison in quit some time when I tinker my traps but isn't it only DP? I'll check it out tommorow when I log on if I remember.

poison tinker traps, like explosion traps, were made to KILL with little to no chance to stop it. Being poisoned with a tinker trap on OSI usually meant dying so it wasn't DP. Remember, here on UOSA, Faust has made curing DP with magery a near certainty. I would hate to see this applied to tinker traps as well. That would make GM Tinker another 100 skill points Faust's mighty magery over powers.

Magery was cool as it was a 'jack of all trades' but it wasn't master of all of them.

Yeah, I remember they did similar on AI. Their reveal spell there was waaay off and it would reveal like an entire screen.

I think you are right about poisons being a percentage though. My brother always rolled with deadly poison and I distinctly remember it dropping their health (and stamina) fast! I don't even recall it being difficult to cure, and by that I mean I can't remember either way, but I do know when people got wracked they flipped out and nearly half of their health would be gone very fast...which fits with the 40% mark.

His favorite pass time was to dress as a sheperd and wait for people to come along and kill him since, for whatever reason, killing the sheperds in delucia was the thing to do. Which, btw, is another era accurate spawn...there should be sheperds just north of delucia where all of the animals spawn :-p

Perhaps the difficulty of self-curing with magery is timing the casting between 3 second ticks. With potions you just had to chug 1 or 2 and you were ok with DP. With magery, you just coudn't blindly click a button and be rid of the poison.

If a tick hit you while casting you were certainly interrupted. If you didn't get your berrings and time it properly, you would go down in a spiral of failure :D

It's "Regular" or "Deadly" based on your skill and luck.

Code: Select all

        level = getSkillLevel(user, 0x19); // get magery skill level
        if(random(1, 100) < level)
        {
          poisonstrength = 0x02; // Regular
        }
        else
        {
          poisonstrength = 0x04; // Deadly
        }
I like to add that the poison damage system in the demo is much more deadly than what stratics from 1999 tells us. If you don't have a mage near you lethal poison will kill surely you in 15 seconds.
lethal => damage = halve your life points plus 2, every 5 seconds a 1 out of 3 chance to recalcuate the damageYou would be really unable to cure yourself with bandages since that timer is 18 seconds.

What is the timer for bandages in the Demo? I think the 15/18 second time didn't come about until 1999.

The healing/curing times were changed in May 25 1999 to 15/18 second timers.
http://wiki.uosecondage.com/index.php? ... 05/25/1999

About the poison code:
There appears to have been a major revision of poison on 4/13/1998.

http://wiki.uosecondage.com/index.php?t ... 04/13/1998

This revision would be captured in the Demo Code and particularly what I'd like to know is how fast poison gives damage. Is it 3 second or 5 seconds?

That depends on the poison strength.
lesser = 15 sec
regular and greater = 10 sec
deadly and lethal = 5 sec

What is the timer for bandages in the Demo?
I don't think that matters anyways because curing poison (and resurrecting) with a bandage is not in the demo code. That feature was added a few months after its release.
