I was thinking a VPN might help get your data there and back again using a less congested route. I don't know much about it...

It's a "virtual" private network. It uses tunneling and encryption protocols to secure two or more points across the public internet. It would take the same hops, but have the additional burden of whatever encryption algorithms you select.
