People have run in my house n snagged garbage before cause I gate to brit bank n shit from inside my crib, because the rest of my shiznit is so well secured, BUT, I have never been looted since 1997.
There was only 1 time, where someone almost got away with it. It was right after trammel on OSI around 2001-2002 and I owned a log cabin directly at xroads on Catskills. I was logged out. Apparently when I went to log out to get some dinner, someone followed me in. Since I was in a hurry I didnt think to check/detect the house. I ate dinner and came back. When I logged back in I saw a corpse on the floor. I still remember his name, it was something like "DarkHorse" or some crap. Anyways, I am like wtf, so I run over to the corpse and double click. All my rares and crap were on his body. Then, I saw what happened. Luckily for me, I had 2 tinker trapped boxes I never cleaned out of my house and were in a locked down chest. They were there by mistake, and there were originally 3 of them, but I opened one a few days before and died, and thought to myself "I have to take those tinker traps out of that box or else Im gonna accidentally open them again."
Turns out, it was a good thing I didnt! If you are curious to know what loot was on his corpse, the only thing worth value was my black dye tub, but there was also a hair restyle and a couple vanq maces.

Speaking of accidentally opening tinker traps...

I used to keep a bunch of tinker traps all over my abode as part of my theft deterrent protocol. I knew where all of them were and was very careful around them.

A couple of them were unsecured, locked down boxes on tables that blocked the entry way into the back room of the tower I used to live in.

On one fateful evening after drinking a bit too much beer while playing UO (as is my custom), I was logged in on Vhyx v1.0. Was quite a few kills into stat-loss. I needed to head into the back room for something or other and for no other reason than being drunk, instead of unlocking a table I double clicked a bomb. Whoops.

Stupid way to kill off a stat-loss char, but not nearly as stupid as another time while in an inebriated state I felt the need to charge in and fight a group of TG on one of my other chars. WHEEEEE!!

It happens if you don't lock up properly. Maybe two years back I was lucky and found three unlocked houses in a single week and looted everything that wasn't nailed down, including a stack of 60000 fish steaks.

In all three cases it was a larger house that had two front doors that need locking, and in all three cases it was the right hand door that was unlocked. Probably mistakenly unlocked when trying to lock or unlock the left hand door. I'm still using the nightshade I got in those loots two years later.

Welcome to the server... and for a new player, you a have a well placed small right next to the Vesper/Minoc moongate. Given the location of your macro house it is imperative that you lock your doors - after all - you have a key locked down on the front of your small, use it. You were afk macroing next to the public moongate with your door unlocked and are surprised/upset you were looted and talking of quitting in response to your negligence? You will need thicker skin, and some personal responsibility, to make it around here...

With that said, I can make arrangements to have most of your items returned, but honestly, the only thing of value were your regs and I believe you had a tunic of fortification or something - but everything else was junk and not taken by me – no telling if someone else came along after me. PM me and we can meet up somewhere so you can get your regs back.

Very honorable of you to make such an offer. I can understand the difficulty of not knowing whether someone is new to the shard or not. We all "make a living" in our own way, whether it's from our neighbors, random strangers in the wilderness, or monsters. However, if I might make a suggestion to those so inclined to "lighten the load" of unlocked homes, do it with some style. You could leave a "calling card" in their home or containers letting them know they have been robbed, like a book with a message or something, (perhaps next to a suspicious box, lol). In this way, they learn a lesson and also have a unique experience that can only be found in UOSA.

Offer was fulfilled, I ran into the victim at the Moonglow bank today (by luck, not in response to a PM requesting a meeting). I gave back the bulk of regs - primarily 13k shade, but I did not keep count of the entire take so I doubt he was made completely whole, and pointed him to this thread to see how/why this happened. Oh well, my good deed for the year is accomplished... back to being a jerk.

There's a great post about house security somewhere! , you should read it because it's a great help for new people. Actually, before I settled my 1st house ever in UO, I read it and up to now, never got looted. Let's hope I dont make mistakes in the future!

Basically:
-Lock everything. Put REALLY important items inside a secured container.
-If you dont feel safe, put a barrier with tables and trash barrel.. Even if your house is Private this adds a conforting sense of security (I use it! I prefer loosing some tiles than items!)
- ALWAYS detect hidden as soon as you enter your house. It has 100% success rate and reveals anyone hidden at any place inside the house. If you ever see someone inside, ban it fast. If you put a table barrier, detect before removing the trash barrel.
- Never gate inside your house if you dont have a special place to do so. No matter how alone you think you are, when you open a gate, most probably someone followed you!

I agree you're going to have to have thicker skin to make it around here. I got looted shortly after I came back and they cleaned me out only because I started macroing and forgot to not only lock my doors but lock my chests as well. On a good note they left me standing there macroing alive for when I awoke the next morning.

I had a whole gaggle of magic weapons including my prized vanq hally and about 50k in regs. Hurt and took me a few days to get that sour taste outta my mouth but I got back in the saddle and rode on.
