how do i leave a guild?

i resign from my guild

I'm a member of the thieve's guild. I want to resign so I can join the mage guild to get a discount on regs.

I've said "I resign from my guild" both to the Thief Guildmaster and also just out loud, not around the guildmaster.

Then I go to the mage guildmaster, drop 500 gp on him, and he says, you must resign from your other guild first.

WTF? Any ideas?

Go upto the thieves Guildmaster/mistress and say "name quit"
