Need help placing foot stools for bridged Towers

Is there some sort of trick to this because I am unable to place my stools to where i can walk across towers from rooftop to rooftop. It's acting as if I can't step onto the footstool. And I know it works because I bought the towers with a row of stools already placed to cross between. I'm just trying to widen the bridge. Thx on any suggestions or ideas

Same concept as building stairs: 1 fishsteak and a footstool (not a normal stool), then 3 fishsteaks, and another footstool, etc.
