Monster Spawn

Post by a_llama »

So Im new to UO Second Age. I have been working on my first char, a T hunter. I have been out trying to make some money provoking and the spawn at the Ophidians out side of the Terathan keep and it sucks. All the monsters spawn in random groups and most of them are stuck on ledges. I went over to the Terathan keep and the spawn was almost all drones and no warriors or adventurers. So I figured I would buy some lvl 1 T maps and work those for money. The random spawn around the T maps is so strong that I cant even get a chance to dig up a lvl one map. without dieing Im hit by so many snakes giant snakes and SS not to mention the random orcs and other spawns that I dont even get a chace to try and dig up the chest. Its been along time since I played UO back in the day but is this really era accurate? I remember lvl 1 maps being easy and the Ophidian spawn and Terathan keep being full of monsters it seems now everything is reversed. Can anyone offer any tips or advise for a new player wanting to play some UO but on the verge of just giving up.

Tip 1, work your skills up on the overland spawn on the mainland. Tip 2, find a guild to help you out and get you on your feet.

I recommend the Dungeon Guards.

ya I been working my bard skills in the Moonglow zoo and Brit stables. And getting my start up money in graveyards standing behind the fence. Im at:

36.7 cartography
6.2 lock picking
58.6 magery
16.8 meditation
GM music
94.3 provocation
50.3 resist

I got the basic skills down where I can teleport up onto ledges recall back and forth heal and cure with magic use lighting to kill of remaining last spawn.

Im to the point where I need more serious gold to start working my magery and cartography.

Ill start taking a look at guides tho

There are a few ways to build that character.

You should probably go the bard route first.

These 4 skills will never change
Provocation
Musicianship
Magery
Meditation

These skills are extremely popular but you have to make choices about dropping some for treasure chest hunting
Eval Int
Wrestling
Resist

Then comes
Cartography
Lockpcking -lock picking 95-100 is a 3 week task in itself, but nets a lot of money.

Usually people are left with this character

Provocation
Musicianship
Meditation
Magery
Cartography
Lockpicking

and the 7th skill is always up for debate, Wrestling, Eval, Resist, or Hiding

As far as handling monsters, setting up lots of hot keys and macros will help so much with provocation, your goal should be to reduce all clicking, no clicking skill gems, monsters, spell icons, etc. That way you can constantly move on your horse (always have a horse) and provoke mobs without ever getting hit. You will probably cast magic reflect often when dealing with casters.

Just go to Destard and 2v1 monsters or have the dragons kill the drakes and recall the gold to banks frequently because you'll get pk'd a lot. Also, you can hide a bag of a few recall regs and a town rune somewhere in the woods so you can get back to town after rezzing. A lot of pks will rez and gate after killing you too.

Thanks

Are all the good bard spots pretty well covered by PKs?

And is Destard the best bet or are there other good bard spots too?

Just personal opinion (as most forums are :D ) I found macroing a provoker ( as stated above ) while doing a gathering skill such as lumberjacking/mining to allocate a large sum of resource (5k ingots, 10k lumber [not both, just one]) will net the gold one would require for macroing magery. Another thing to keep in mind is that most holidays come with a holiday gift bag, play your cards right and with a little luck you may land an item in your bag worth a house deed or more, although the next holiday is some time away.

In total, gathering will keep you from getting pk'd by hallymages on nightmares while your character is too young to get the recall off in time. Use the time you are gathering to macro your characters ( Plural, plan them out, prioritize which one will be the bread winner [provoker]) and the gold from the gatherer to macro on. Finally, don't undersell, or oversell your gathered material. Research the true average price, and sell accordingly. There's no crime in underselling to get a quick buck so you can keep your macros running, but too often and it may add up to a sink.
As far as "bard spots" - anywhere a bard will go, pks will follow. Moreover, anywhere any gold seeker goes..... With this said travel light and recall often, some people take their leave at 2k gold, some at 5k gold. This is personal preference. Avoid extreme areas such as Cyclops Valley, and I do forgive for not noting a "good area", but to do so would inadvertently cause reds to watch the area simply by viewing this post. There ARE good gold per hour spots with few reds.... but not easily found ( Thankfully, or else the red would already be there..... :D )

*Edit* I would like to add kudos to Eastwood for bringing up keybinds. If you have to double click recall when you see red, its way too late. Also as he has stated, ORPG's with any type of risk require your movement and combat to be seperate, ( I use shift+F for provoke, although I know some people find modifiers encumbersome ). Keybinds increase survival 10 fold.

Recall
Wait for target ( 2 second timeout )
Absolute Target ( Your bank rune that WON'T be blocked [key, make it a obsure bank, in an obsure tile])
Do not mash this key. One press, then pray.

Hope it helps,
Nidaic The Viking

Some of the treasure chests are in dangerous locations... e.g. Islands with Silver Serpents as mentioned. I'm glad you stuck with it and realised that there are also treasure chests in much safer areas.

Do this!!!!!! Macro your bard, and go mine for ingots or get boards. 10k ingots will net you 70-80k, which you can then GM magery with. Once you have that, life becomes much easier on UOSA.
