What to do if charged by pk out of nowhere?

Post by mazda »

Hello

having had some fun getting killed lately I have tried to go over what i could of done better. To me all reds are are people who like to pvp. I would like to pvp however i prefer battles, and duels vs just going after whatever I can get. i like being blue what can I say.

What I keep on me now is 4 magic trapped boxes, like 12 plus of cure and heals. I usually pvm one handed with a fork or kryss. I dropped archery and am working towards this as a final template.

Anatomy 100 got it
Fencing 100 got it
tactics 100 got it
magery 100 at 45
ressist 100 at 55
healing 100 at 68
evaluate int 100 at 30

stats i would like are
100 got it
75
50

Currently
100 90 35

So pk shows up casts para i do the box get hit with explode do bandage drink heal then para me again another box i open first bandage not done yet or fails, then i drink another heal while charging him but alas health to low get whacked with halby and then ebolted as I try to heal or something. So i am doing stuff wrong but at least I am lasting past the initial onslaught whatever that matters. Ressist will help and I am an idiot but i get excited cant hit the hotkeys good because my hearts pounding and i am just to excited.

So I mean remain calm, play the game etc but man i get a major rush in pvp. I used to have fun with it without razor like when arch was awesome could move shoot and train it by a polar bear attacking you with it armed you didnt even need arrows lol. Everybody had heavies. But now alot has changed and I need the kindergarden level school of pvp please :P

Thanks
Brad
characters remain annoymous as they are embarrassed lol!

It takes 15 seconds for your bandage to work, during which you can chug one yellow potion and heal something like 10-30 damage. So best case, 100 plus 30 is 130 damage to kill you. If you stand around with any mage, they can easily do 130 damage. Fact is, you need to either:

1) run
2) disrupt their spells
3) heal yourself with magic
4) use reflect or other items

to avoid dying before your bandage completes.

(1) is no fun, and (2) is a matter of luck, so I like to rely on (3) and (4). Especially 3. Which means, get yourself to 100 Magery as soon as possible, giving you 6 castings of heal, which cannot be disrupted, and will heal somewhere between 66 and 90 damage. Ideally too, you'd get Wrestling instead of Eval, so you won't just sit there taking halberd hits every time you cast a couple in a row.

Run, Run, Run. I don't care what anyone says, knowing how and when to run is one of the most important skills in this game.

situation: youre farming and a pk comes in, immediately dropping a spell on you.

option 1: charge at him, already injured, and he's probably already casting spells 2 and 3 on you, so by the time you actually swing your weapon once it's likely youre already below 50% health. You will die if he can follow up with a hally swing most likely.

option 2: immediately offscreen, run with him on your tail until your are fully healed. When youre healed you can either recall out of the situation or turn around and attack him. You can use the berserk strategy most pks use against them, often they will react more slowly to a victim turning on them, so try and do as much damage as possible in a short time. Use purple pots, wands, magic weapons, and since your template has eval, save mana for an ebolt when they least expect it.

As for the pvp jitters, that really only goes away with experience, but just breath slowly, and try not to worry. PVPing, pking and escaping all follow fairly set routines of actions, and committing these scenarios to muscle memory where you don't even have to think is the key to being successful and fluid in your actions.

You really need to raise your healing and anat as soon as possible, because a failed heal can often be a death sentence, so you really need to keep the chance of that minimized.

As for paralyzing, I think you need to keep a MINIMUM of 9 trapped pouches at all times, use the "use once" agent in razor, and have the hotkey in a convenient location. If you can do that, para shouldn't really be a problem.

Thanks alot guys. So wrestling helps against getting hit, didnt know that or forgot. i have the gm anatomy fencing and tactics so will figure out eval or wrestle. I like the compromise idea, run like the wind then charge back after initial engagement. I mean its crazy but i like pvp so I may just goto pk hotspots accept i will die and just learn the hardway. I mean most pks are pretty nice and dont take my armour or they res. I think the vast majority just want to fight people vs monsters which I can understand. I am just not a bad guy lol. So if you see aetius running around just feel free to attack me because I enjoy the rush!

Thanks
Brad

Regardless of the situation I like to chug a strength potion and immediately start a bandage. Sometimes I'll do that just for PvM.

Always keep reflect on,if you have reflect on and you cast recall as soon as you see red they cant disrupt it.

Its really easy to get out if thats all you want to do.The only time I die any more is when I try to go back and kill them after dropping my loot off.....

If you really want a slick escape, buy some low charge invis items ( check around Yew bank, they are ~ 100 gp/charge...less on clothing). May seem expensive, but once you escape a few times, you will be glad you spent the dough.

Go to the Dress tab in razor and make a new Invis item, then make a macro for toggling your invis item. Make sure the equip key is right by your recall macro.

Some people actually incorporate the equiping invis into the same macro that casts recall / targets rune, but I prefer a standalone toggle invis item macro so I can use it with other spells as well.

This technique can get you out of a lot of sticky situations.

For the type of player that you are creating, mainly PvM, you need to drop eval as it does nothing for your character. Eval on that char would only be for dueling 1v1 a mage and using an ebolt to finish him. Wrestling is a great option for you since it doesnt seem like you want parry. Another skill that might be useful is hiding, a quick teleport then hide will give you time while your bandage heals you as they will either have to cast reveal which wastes mana or they throw a purple potion at you...in both instances it will take them roughly 5-7 seconds to do either and you should have healed by then or at least let enough time go by where you can drink another yellow potion. And its pretty handy in most dungeons.

I'm pretty lazy and forgetful so I often don't follow this advice but it's actually the best thing suggested here. Even your miner should have reflect up. And don't just think of this as a pre-combat thing. Toss that reflect back up as soon as you can.

the only surefire way to avoid being pkd is to quit UO.

Hey many of the above posters provided really good information. In addition I would like to add;

1. GM or nearly GM your magic resist.
2. Greater heal wands and staves could be useful.
3. In addition to buying some cheap Invis items, buy some cheap reflect items. The clothing is usually much cheaper than jewelry, and wont hurt much if you lose it.
4. Like Ragancy says set up hotkeys to arm/disarm the items...Also reflect items use 1 charge per 5 seconds, so be sure to un-equip it after your outta danger. Invis lasts 2 minutes.
5. Have a disarm/arm hotkey for your weapon and secondary weapon, also check the auto uneqiup hands before casting box in Razor.
6. Have a few more pouches for pvm and several more if your pvping. Also in Razor set up a use once agent to use your trapped pouches. Much faster than going to you inventory and clicking on them.
7. If you hunt in a certain area often enough, find out where the pks like to recall in, and plan around that.

This is great advice, and don't forget your blue and red pot.

What I'd do as soon as I see that red name pop up:
1.- If at 100 HP's -> drink white pot, start bandage, drink yellow pot. If you have some damage -> start bandage, drink white pot, drink yellow pot. (It's only a 1 sec difference, but trust me, you'll want it)
2.- Start running away from the aggressor.
3.- While running drink blue pot.
4.- continue running another 5 secs or so.
5.- at around 10 secs into your bandage timer, drink a red pot and turn around.
6.- fight

What you will try to accomplish with this is start the fight with the cards stacked on your favor. If you time it correctly, the pk will try to combo you as soon as you turn around, and by then your bandage should be almost ready to kick in. This will probably leave the PK with 40 less mana, and you with 120 HPs and close to full stam.

Some people like to set up razor macros to PvP for them, I just like to do it manually because I get a better feel of the fight then (ie. if at mid fight your bandage is at 10secs, your 10 sec yellow pot cool off is done, and you still have 80+ HPs, I'd restart my bandage to get the timer going for when I really need it.)

jeez this is like really awesome.

Ok for the record.
I am not japanese I sell Mazda cars :)
My mother is jewish and my Dad was Italian so i am adopted and am cheap with a bad temper :)

Regardless thanks you guys for the advice. I need to get into razor and learn it so that I can use alot more of its features. I am not really into pvm unless I am out with friends or need gold. I really like pvp even though I am not good at it.
