UO and forums

Post by elhorno »

I do not seem to remember using forums back when I used to play ultima, and by recollection, if I needed to sell an item or house, you would spam at the bank.
This isn't meant to be a suggestion to take down the forums, I see them as integral at not only showing potential players the shards level of activity, but many other useful things such as user submitted guides etc.
Instead I am interested 2 discussions; Was activity at banks in second age era due to simply high populations, or was it because they served the needed function of "forums" back in the day. (Or am I high and there were good forums that everyone and their mother used)
Second, hypothetically, if forums and IRC were not provided, what would happen? Would the tech savvy people have an alternate locations setup to buy and sell goods? Or would people start going to the banks to sell?

back in the day most big purchases/sales were done through 3rd party trade site
it was hard to find buyers for rare level items by standing at the bank spamming at noobs

I used to love hanging out at the bank and "throwing" my text so it looks like somebody else is talking. I would go up to somebody who looks semi-afk and throw my text over them, saying "Selling [insert rare, very desirable item name here] for [insert very low price here]". People would come up and try to trade with the person who I impersonating. Had some really hilarious conversations (I could keep it going a long time if I was impersonating an AFK guy).

The best part was when the guy I was impersonating was clueless to what I was doing and was all like, "Huh? Why are you giving me gold?" or simply runs off (to be chased by the guy who wanted to buy the item "Hey! Wait!").

Had some really good times... had me ROFL regularly. I miss all the bank sitters and peddlers for this reason... there just isn't the audience there used to be.
Most people like us, or at least they like what we do. Regardless, we appreciate all our victims, and we hope that their encounter with us is a memorable one.

I was trying to think of it too when I read this...
uotradespot. I purchased lots from there.

We also had our own forums...but we call it back then "the boards".

Thanks for remembering!
