Out of curiosity, a second shard?
Re: Out of curiosity, a second shard?
Can we get a Derrick post in this thread?

I agree with this. With the same rule set, it would eventually turn out to be the same situation for 'new' players a year down the road. Except you would have fractured the population and essentially put the whole project in jeopardy.MatronDeWinter wrote:New shard will never happen. It's a horrible idea in any case. Lagrath has some very valid points.
Personally started from scratch last year and built up to the point where I had bought all the bald island properties and a bunch on mainland. I lost interest and let every house decay including one on the main land with all of my loots. Just came back a month or so ago and am set right back up and having fun.
There will always be a place to live as people upgrade, downgrade, quit, die, lose interest, forget to refresh etc etc. There are probably some properties that will never come up on the market, but even with a brand new shard those spots are gonna be taken quick and for good by the hard core anyway.

Seems like you just started and don't like the disadvantage you are at from not being here from ground 0. If this is your attitude, chances are even with a new shard you'd be complaining that people who have perfected exactly how to succeed here have a 7x GM and are out PKing you 24/7 3 days after it goes live. Just put your head down and play rather than thinking it will ever be a 'fair' experience. As far as I remember, UO was never fair to the new or inexperiencedLagrath wrote:The point was whether you really want to go to a new or undecided player or guild and go "Hey look here we have a server where everyone has 3 accounts and every character can have a house on a server that's already been running for years and where you'll have a hard time reaching many house owners because they just log on twice a month to refresh their 10 homes
Re: Out of curiosity, a second shard?
It is really not that hard to get going on this server. After a year (over a quarter of which was spend being totally newb and the rest partly newb) I now have 4 tower spots (3 standing towers, 1 large brick) a 2 story (my first place, caught an IDOC luckily, didn't even have enough to afford a small back then so I farmed like crazy for days to get one and then another small to block the spot). and 2 smalls in prime locations (30 seconds from Britain moongate and one near yew where I do most of my non-violent farming
) My point is, if you like this shard and get into it, it wont take long to get a place and be part of the long term community. Speaking of community, the one here is great and pretty much anyone you ask will be willing to help in some capacity or another. A second shard seems to be a bad idea due to the split factor, a shard wipe makes more sense to me personally. Would I be pissed if I lost everything, maybe a little sulking for a day or two. However, knowing that everyone else is in the same boat will make me get over it in no time. Diablo II wiped the server every year I think and people still flocked from all over the world. Maybe since the community here is smaller a server wipe every 5 years could help 'freshen' things up. If it never happens, I will still play knowing the chances of getting a castle on grass are slim to none. The knowledge that many here have the 'l33t l00t' makes no difference to me, I am not playing to collect and hoard pixels, I am here to enjoy the MMORP aspect. Who cares if someone has a castle with all the rares in the game locked down inside or if some power gamers will destroy you with paralyze spam before you can even get your recall macro off. I don't think the original poster is complaining that its hard to get going, that he wants some house spot he didn't get, or anything of that nature. He was merely stating that a 'fresh start' can encourage a lot of people to come try a shard.
Later points brought up were that a fresh start could provide a golden opportunity to fix some long standing issues that are sort of 'locked' into place currently. Including a possible siege rule set, which would be plain awesome.

Re: Out of curiosity, a second shard?
The difficulty of getting a house or resources is not the issue. The issue is the ease of getting a house and resources because there's no one there to compete for it with you. For example, lets say I want to train healing, for me its funner when the challenge is trying to sheer the sheep that just spawned in yew sheep pens before the next guy not laboriously making trips back and forth from the tailor shop to my house to the bank then counting down the days until my skill is GM.
Since everyone has all their skills maxed out, the only consistent player interaction is tank mage fights and as much as I love the wizard battles, I need more of a UO experience to stay entertained.

Re: Out of curiosity, a second shard?
I agree. This is also why I believe in fewer accounts. Fewer characters force more player interaction and develop a better economy. I would be stoked if we did a siege type shard with 1 character per account...and maybe limit to 2 accounts to further reduce things. Just imagine how much rarer GM blacksmiths and such would be? There'd actually be a market!Kabal wrote:The difficulty of getting a house or resources is not the issue. A shard wipe would scare away more people than the one's it would attract, IMHO.

Re: Out of curiosity, a second shard?
It'd be fun of course, to have all the established people here start over and see who's really boss, but a wipe would do just that: wipe out the player base. And a second shard... well, remember how UO2 got canceled? Same deal.
