Blacksmithing tinkering skill increase speeds

Post by LargePiece »

Man, I was stoked to find this server! I just reactivated my account on normal UO and it kinda sucks now! Everyone just hanging out in a small wee world (Malas) nowhere near the interest of the original t2a days back in 98-99. So thanks Derrick!

Anyways, I happened to be using my newbie smith on the EA UO servers (before I gave up because there wasn't anyone to talk to in Britannia) and had to get his tinkering from 40 to 50 so he could reliably make pick axes. I then needed to do the same thing with my new smith (Maximum Spankage) on the T2a server. While mining skill increase is definitely faster on T2a, I'm not so sure about tinkering.

I was using the 8 by 8 method on the EA server, and while I'm not sure that works under the old t2a rules, it took me nearly twice as many ingots to get my tinkering skill up to 50 over here at T2a. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

I was also wondering whether the smithing increase was slower, although it could be that I just don't remember how painful it really was to increase smithing back in the good old days on EA's servers. :)

8x8 is disabled here, we don't have any anti-macro code and there is also no power hour so skill gain should always be consistent. Crafting skills on second age are slower than other skills, but I'd be surprised to find that they are slower than the EA servers, except possible in power hour.

Slower crafting gains limit the amount of crafters in game and generally contribute to a richer economy by limiting the number of players willing to make crafting mules for themselves, thereby giving crafters an outlet for their product via player vendors.

I know that tinkering and all other skill gain was deathly slow back on OSI but I'm not sure what has been done since the end of that era. Others may be able to provide better info on that.

Great to have you on the shard!

Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for your reply Derrick.

I think I asked you this question the other day, but just to be totally sure:
is there any point in varying the types of things I make as a smith for maximum skill gain? Or should I just stick with the things relevant to my skill level that consume the least number of ingots?

You did, but it's good to have a documented answer, no it doesn't matter. The skill gains are based on difficulty, the game won't remember what you've made in the past. The cheaper the better at your skill level.
