An idea to help more new players to stick to server:

Post by Pringles »

In a harsh enviroment like UOSA it is hard for a new player to get settled. There are guilds taking new players and tons of players who help new players, but this all could be done way more effectively.

Thoose who have played SP might remember a new players guild called NEW. This was a serverwide accepted new players guild. The members of this guild would not be attacked or griefed for one month. After this period they were free game :)

The rules of this guild were (if i remember correctly)
- a new player can only be in this guild for one month
- the members of this guild is forbidden to participate in any pvp action and were not allowed to steal from other players or cause harm to other players in anyway.

This NEW guild was led by someone respected from the red community on SP.

I think it would benefit UOSA a lot if we had a guild like this.

What do you guys think of this idea?

There was a guild named NEW on this server, however it hasnt been active since last year. :(
It would be nice if another new player guild restarted.
On that note what happened to the New Arrivals guild that Meridian Mardas sp? runs?

Too easy to make a ton of money on this shard and really not all that useful.

Also, none of the reds would recognize the guild unless they read forums/paid attention and would likely not respect the 30 day 'hold'.

Starting out is not difficult.

I started here last week and already have a very comfortable nest egg and bevy of up-and-coming characters. Granted I did play UO many moons ago, so I know the game, it wasn't very difficult to start up here.

UO is a harsh game. Providing a one-month protection from what will happen day 31 (being PKed) is setting people up to quit once their bubble breaks.

Eh, give it a try if you want. Its not that expensive to set up a guild.

We should at least try again. But it worked on Siege Perilous due to personal accountability. If you murdered a NEW it wasn't on an "alt" and people would hold a grudge including other PKs and, very likely, your own guild. We may have a small enough community to make it work but there's still a lot of anonymity.

I've been considering forming a "community enrichment council" guild to help out with things like this as well as events, brokering and shard politics. Other guilds send an ambassador to the guild stone to act as a representative and as a sign of solidarity to show new players and everyone else that someone's watching out for the best interests of the shard as whole. Does this sound like something people would be interested in supporting?

Pringles,

Some of us, leaded by Joueur Moyen started NEW a while ago, unfortunately player rotation (not creating any sort of bond) and lack of activity was the end of NEW.

McS,

That is definitely a possibility, and C^V would participate in it, if you would have us.

When I was on SP I was in the NEW guild (was new to SP ruleset just not UO) and I ended up helping out the peeps who were new to UO but chose Siege as their first shard when the guild GM's were offline.

They really appreciated my helping the other UO noobs because explaining skill locks and training take up alot of time.

After that I joined GIL (because all they did was champ spawns and it was fastest way to get stuff and they were trustworthy).

Also, the fact that pks did not kill NEW members was not actually true. Many of the top pks on that shard especially Wyrm and Krystal (Krystal had the highest murder count in UO history confirmed by staff at that time) actually enjoyed hunting out the NEW members. And they made a sport of it.

Wyrm would even camp out the NEW guild house with a blessed fast cast orny (fergot what it was called) and a death robe.

It is a good idea just plan on investing most of your time on UO helping because it takes alot of time and typing.

One idea would to be to make books for the various skills and how to raise them, skill locks, etc etc.

Because typing the same stuff over and over again can grow tiresome and the wiki is good rule of thumb but it does not explain everything and a couple things are out of date (fergot what those things were).

*I don't know what happend to him. N/A still is there, but I hardly see Meridian.

BlaiseDad:

* that maybe true for UO vets returning to the game, but for ppl with less experience it's actually really hard to make money.

Also, none of the reds would recognize the guild unless they read forums/paid attention and would likely not respect the 30 day 'hold'.

*That's why this new players guild has to be set up by someone respected from the red community or by a pvp guild who is respected.

Baslin:
UO is a harsh game. Providing a one-month protection from what will happen day 31 (being PKed) is setting people up to quit once their bubble breaks.

*This should not happen that often, because once their time ends in the new player guild they will mostlikely join a guild. Also they are at that time settled or almost settled, which means they have means to properly equipe and have more skills to defend themselves.

Ronk:
Eh, give it a try if you want. Its not that expensive to set up a guild.

*I am only sharing this idea and I do not think I am qualified to lead in this. I was hoping someone respected from the red community would take this idea and shape it to his/her own.

*That's a way to get it going. You need ppl from the whole community to make this work. I hope other vets read this and contact you about your idea. If you need my help let me know :)

Pirul:
Some of us, leaded by Joueur Moyen started NEW a while ago, unfortunately player rotation (not creating any sort of bond) and lack of activity was the end of NEW.

*I see, didn't know about that. But good to know it wasn't a one man action, but more ppl involved. I hope some UOSA vet is willing to set this up and use his connections to get the whole server involved.

Pied Piper:

*Being in this new player guild, of course won't give 100% garante to not get pk'd, because when some pk's are bored they go after whoever they want anyways.

Off topic: how come you are not the same person as Pied Piper in the game?

Once again: I do not see myself qualified to start this new players guild. Because I am too young myself on this server and still learning. I shared this idea in the hope some UOSA vet would pick it up and use his/her connections to make something like this happen. McSchnurke I hope you get pm's of ppl willing to get involved. If you need my help let me know, I will do whatever I can :)

I am. The guy you always see in town wearing a grey robe with swords skill and intentionally holds a lantern like I do is not me.

That is an imposter and he already tried to trick my friend into letting him in the house.

I talked about it a lil in this thread.... viewtopic.php?f=42&t=30182

Also my Pied Piper character is over a year old (Started playing here last year) but I had over a 9month hiatus. So my guy was still pretty crappy when I came back.

Also when I made him there were like only 3 or 4 PPs but now there are buttloads when you look the name up.

I plan on making a 2nd PP but havent yet. When I do though his profile and look will be the exactly the same as my other but skills will be a little different.

And, when I made my thief a year ago there was no one else with the name my thief has. But literally within the past 2 weeks other versions of him popped up out of nowhere.

Also, my swordsman guy I had made year ago was an original name also. Now there are 3 more of them.

I still have a couple characters no one copied names from as of now.

I MISS MY FLUTES BUT I AM GETTING USED TO IT! :(

Hello all,

N/A (New Arrivals) was my attempt at creating a new players guild. Although I received great community support from guild such as Immortal Lord and C^V the experiment was an ultimate failure.

My guild seemed to run into several problems. I'll list some:

- New players didn't want to make a commitment, they didn't understand that a new player guild is a temporary thing.

-New players simply did not understand the concept.

- I could not recruit enough veteran players to help mentor newer players.

- Mentoring new players is a huge time commitment.

- My guild was targeted by griefers.

- New players would simply quit without warning.

It is a big undertaking. Although I did manage to help several new players to become successful I don't think a new player guild is really needed. To play this game you need to be intuitive and pro-active. All the information a new player can possibly need to know is on these forums. There are a lot of great people out there to help players. And there are even great vendors that sell items cheaply.

This shard is so easy to get plugged into. In fact, its great. Nothing like how this game was 10 years ago. From all my time working with new players its that the best thing we can do is simply encourage them and the worst thing we can do is baby them.

With all that being said I'm always available for Private Messages here on the forums with questions from new players. N/A is currently running a vendor house just north of the minoc/vesper moongate with very cheaply priced weapons and armor geared for new players.

I know several of you may disagree with me, and I encourage you to press forward with a new player guild if you really think it will be beneficial and really want to make that time commitment.

Good Luck

MM

This is a real problem with trying to help people out. I've given away lots of gold and taken many new players on dungeon hunts, etc, and have simply never seen those players again. Most players that start here are only playing for a short nostalgia kick and are gone within a week or a month. Player retention is really hard in a 14 year old game that is catering to a T2A fanbase.

Trying to get new players more involved in the community and befriending them is probably the best thing you can do.
