PK - Someone please explain
Re: PK - Someone please explain
Re: K^A - Much like WL, K^A is a very large guild. You'll have some players who are real helpful, and others who are flat out griefers. Unfortunately, the latter tends to call on more attention.
Re: Finding friends in game - it is possible to find good guys in game. I strongly recomend going over the guilds forum and read a little about the most established guilds around. Recognize the tags in game, and you'll get an idea of who to approach and who to run from. Also, talk to people on IRC or through forum PMs, that's a good way of meeting friends.

try to crew up with a few noobs in DG and farm with them. then when you get good enough, you can go on your own.Ahntara wrote:How is this possible when you're running me down? If you'd given me the chance I would have gladly talked to you.Loathed wrote:make friends, be nice
Coming back to UO after so many years has been confusing. I played into Renaissance and figuring out exactly what's what, and what isn't, has been disconcerting. The software was mindboggling for me also. I'm not illiterate, but I never used UOAssist, so the whole Razor thing has been a learning curve. I can't/don't use it for regular play because it crashes me.
I did read the guides and have posted here requesting help. Feels even more lame that I epitomize "nice", going out of my way to approach and help new players and make friends. None of it made any difference when you and Incivility ganked one of my lame noobs.
So, since you're the player the question, answer this...where am I supposed to go to work up skills so that I can offer you a challenge/fight/worthy opponent (instead of my char's backside) at some point? How do I make friends with the ppl who are friended up, experienced, wealthy and already red from playing for ages? How do I approach your red when everything I read is to run from/recall out/just die? Are these things even possible? Cuz I'd love to get to know some vets here, especially the highly skilled guys like yourself. But I guarantee that if you see one of my avatar's in game, you're just gonna kill her like you did yesterday. I have no chance of befriending you.

Re: PK - Someone please explain
I find that an emergency recall macro solves all but my laggiest of problems with PKs. UO has risk, which is what separates it from WoW; stuff will be lost. My PvM'r has 4 or 5 sets of everything he needs to function in his bank.
These gank squads exist because it is fun to gank. I understand that its not fair or competitive, but there is a certain joy in tracking down one of the rare folks that farm dungeons solo and murder them. It is not so much about preying on the weak and/or gaining loot as it is about tracking someone down and spoling their fun. Its the FPS attitude come home to UO. Ultimately, I find I enjoy trying to thwart the gank squads with vigilance. That's part of the fun for me. If I die I only lost a few pixels and a few minutes.

Matty's advice is pretty solid. I normally don't like to spell it out, but DG, IL and C^V have a ton of helpful players. As I said, go over the Guilds Forum and read about all guilds. Will save you the aggravation of trying to meet good guys on the fly.

I see. Hopefully in time, we can weed out the more unsavory types from K^A as I don't believe the tenets of the guild to be supportive of negativity. However, I am new, so I could be sorely mistaken.Pirul wrote:Re: K^A - Much like WL, K^A is a very large guild. You'll have some players who are real helpful, and others who are flat out griefers. I am on IRC nearly every business day at work and I've spent quite a bit of time helping newer players.
I've trusted several in my tower for safe training (even though I screwed up once and got both a newb and myself murdered becuase we were too close to the roof's edge (screw you Chevy Chase)

Re: PK - Someone please explain
Two recent experiences during the last couple days that relate to this post:
1. Was a yew liches with my stealther and noticed a poor soul who had about 4 corpses lying about trying to get his/her things back. I watched as this person was killed two more times. Finally I looted the persons belongings--not much besides the 3k or so in gold and a few regs---came unhidden and said "head to the east and I'll give you your stuff back". I had full intentions on not only giving the person everything back, but was prepared to hook this person up with actual armor a few silver weaps (which this person lacked). Instead of accepting the things back this person began attacking me. (with a poison spell and fire field hehe). I repeated that I was trying to help, rehid, and this person continued to attack. Needless to say I said the heck with it and banked. The person's name (which I don't remember exactly) seemed awful similar to the poster. Moral of the story: This person deserved to be pked and left empty handed--I almost came back and did just that.
2. Was on my lockpicker in deceit and after being poisoned by that annoying poison elemental, came down the stairs near the pit leading toward the LL room and was met head on by the pk Madrid. Between my body already spasming uncontrollably and a well timed hally whack he made short work of me. He completely went out of his way to locate me, rez me, and give me all I needed to get back home safely. Moral of the story: Regardless if he left me high and dry or was completely polite and helped me get out, I wouldn't have minded either way. Its part of the game and part of the reason I play on this shard--keeps things interesting and exciting. It appears what you are looking for is a land most of left and don't care to revisit. I started new on this shard not so long ago and have managed to become 100% self sufficient with absolutely no help from anyone. There is no reason you can't do the same, and I surely don't buy the fact that pks run new players off the shard. If that's the case, those particular new players would be leaving for other reasons anyhow.

Wow. Talk about making assumptions. This couldn't be farther from my experience. I haven't attacked anyone, including the two reds who chased me down.kwhiz73 wrote:yew liches... this person began attacking me.... seemed awful similar to the poster...deserved to be pked...

As far as being self-sufficient. I've worked hard during my time so far to not only do this but go above and beyond. I have tried to make friends and reach out to others, especially obviously new players. When I see someone standing outside an entrance point with newbie clothes & equipment, no karma/fame title I ask them if they are new or a 2nd char. It's been my routine to give them a couple of k and 500 fishsteaks and ask if they need anything, with the notable exception of one guy who used to play on Siege Perilious. To him, I gave 5k because that fact alone signified that he is an advanced player who will appreciate the help and put it to good use.
Terrific for you that you made it here with no help from anyone. I read the Wiki and the forum but still made some critical errors on my char templets. Information and clarification was what I needed most. Certain ppl went out of their way to help me with that, with money, with a full spell book...I like to do the same for others.
Being away from UO for 8 years, I remembered generalties but few specifics. I spent the first few hours bunny bashing for food, cuz I remembered that my char needed to be well-fed for gain, then burned it all up. Someone finally gave me some food and I could relax enough to make a fisherman mule. Duh!
I saw someone with a "scholar" title and asked if they could make some scrolls cuz I needed to fill a spell book. Another person standing there said, "I just buy the full ones off a vendor". At that point I didn't have 4k to buy a spellbook, so he gated me, bought one and gave it to me. Even he said, "yea, we forget how tough it can be starting out". I think a lot of vets here have lost touch with how tough it can be to enter this game, get all the details down and progress well.
I see ppl macroing add'tl chars and they seem to have all the answers/info/techniques needed to do anything they want in this game and quickly. It is a steep learning curve for some of us. How judgmental of you to not only question my attitude, but degrade me further as someone too lame to not need assistance. Isn't that what this very forum is for? Once again, a contradiction of "come here, ask for help", but when I do you criticize me without knowing anything except what you've read here and pronounce me deserving of being PK'd.

Re: PK - Someone please explain
I'm Hans, not him.
Anyways - I'm probably just repeating crap everyone else is saying. But, my 2 cents:
I remember starting out here. It's a major blow to lose 1000gp and all your equipment when you are just trying to train your char. First time I was PK'd was by a blue jerk, not a red. He killed me when my health was already low from a bone knight, and he dry looted me. So I stalked him for over an hour, using the only skill I was able to bring with me into the game: Grand Master of Annoyance. In retrospect, it was silly of me to get so upset over a well used bank-trash weapons, a pile of gold, and a life that is so easily restored.
After a series of gank squads at the orc fort, and feeling like I was making zero progress, I admit, I looked for another shard, and tried it for only 2 days. I came to the conclusion that it was far worse than Trammel. Though I thought I wanted a safe PvM environment, I didn't. It was boring! (and not to mention all of the pansy role players on that shard made me want to PK them all, but I couldn't)
There's two ways you can take defeat:
Whine, swear, and smash your keyboard
or
Take it like a man.
It used to PISS ME OFF when I'd die. Make it a point to not lose your cool. Many times, if you are calm and oOo a "lol" to your attacker instead of a "oOOo oOo" (you figure out what that says in ghost). Many times they will, as others mention, gate/rez/etc. I'd wager that most PKs are in it for the lol's, and not so much to win the biggest asshole award.
A great way to get over the death-rage is to make a thief. You will die so many times that it won't be long before it doesn't phase you.
Keep a few adventure packs in the bank, with your standard set of regs/weaps/pots, etc. So you don't spend 20 mintues running around town after a death, preparing for another hunt. Grab one of your packs and get going again.
Start marking runes to good hunting spots. When you get PKd, move on to another one. Mix it up every day. Avoid the popular spots until you are strong enough to fight back. Explore the vast lands -- there are tons of great spots to train, that are rarely visited.
Buy a boat, place and dry-dock it so you'll have it once you get a rez. Learn about boat security. So if you are killed in a distant hunting ground, and you find a healer, you can get to a town without your runes, or anyone's help. Think of it as an adventure. You never know what you'll come across.
Keep all your difficult-to-replace things in the bank (like your hunting spots rune book)
And keep improving upon your skills. That is something a PK can't take from you.

Re: PK - Someone please explain
Thx Hans for the reality check and bringing some much needed levity and balance into this discussion. I started this whine fest cuz I don't get the whole PK thing and wanted to broaden my own perspective,
Most of the answers here are missing something. I don't have raging testoserone and a need to prove my manhood. Why should I have to gender-pretend not to be victimized? Do you guys even want girls playing on this shard, or just guys operating a female avatar so that you let your guard down? Even one of the ppl who killed me said, "I want HIS regs".
I may never PVP again, but even if I do it's not gonna happen when my skills are below 50-60. My past experience in UO accommodated all styles of play and I remember having tons of fun in this game four years before I was ever able to PVP. It seems like that is not the case on this server. And if there is no place for a girl that doesn't want to kick ppl's a$$e$ then I really am in the wrong place.
