Computer is on its way out, need some advice.

Post by kill drizitz »

Ok, I can not for the life of my stop getting viruses on my computer. I dont do much on it other than use MS word, check email, play UO, and come to a few forums (and yes that means I do NOT go looking through porn sites). I just got that defrag virus, and was able to get rid of the problem, and then less than a week later I got that HD ram memory virus. Both were pretty harsh. I thought I got rid of them, but since I finally got rid of the HD virus, I have adware problems. Bad ones. Advertisments constantly just start talking through my speakers and theres nothing on Task Manager, links from google always redirected... It just sucks, though I can still play UO on the comp, I need it for more than that.

I have plenty of antivirus, SuperAnti, Malwarebytes, McAfee, nothing seems to remove it all for good.

Long story short, I am considering getting a notebook or something cheap to play UO on at home. Can any of you recommend something that will hold a good speed while playing uo? (I know uo is 2d and not super picky about graphic cards etc) but something with a decent processor or whatever? Im not the computer expert, so if you have a recommendation or a way to fix this problem Id love to hear it. Running a Inspiron 518 desktop now. Id want to plug in a keyboard, mouse, and possibly my monitor if possible. Thanks to anyone that replies. This can get so frustrating.

Plz pm me .. It seems you have a more serious problem and most likely some forum of root kit ..

Honest suggestions (basic pm for me info)

get a NEW copy of windows either your org. "disK" or a clean disk made from a clean pc ..

do a low level format of your HD and reboot computer (you can use third party tools to do a low level wipe)

reformat and install a clean copy of your OS ..

Now comes the more serious point .. getting your new system secure .. (not hard but i'll give you names etc on PM )

You will then not only fix your pc but address the issues that got you into your current position..

You should just backup your personal data, format and reinstall Windows on your old computer. Install a good antivirus software (Symantec or McAfee are perfect for me, for free you could go with Microsoft Security Essentials.) Install, update, then scan your old files before copying them over to the new machine.

If you're just gonna straight out buy a new laptop, anything that's pretty much 450 on up will run UO fine. This game was designed to run on machines with 133mhz processors, so it doesn't take very much cranking power to run it.

Best Buy usually has some nice sales on laptops every other Sunday, so maybe scout the newspaper for the sales flyer and jump on one of those. I picked up a nice Asus laptop for 599 (899 new) from there a few months back. If you're unsure, just google the model numbers and see which has the best reviews (check newegg, etc.)

Before you reload windows:

I have had good success with a root-kit remover called TDSSKILLER from Kaspersky Labs:

Also, it is common that once you remove the spyware/rootkit, that a system or user proxy server is set (basically routing all of your websites through some server in russia/china/etc, so they can modify pages and change google links, etc)

The most common place for a proxy to be set is under Internet Explorer options, under connections. There are two places in the windows registry that can have a proxy set as well.

If you do end up deciding to just purchase a new laptop. I started a business a while back where I buy electronics bulk and sell (mainly to businesses) but I can almost always get friends and acquaintances better deals that if they were to go to best buy/new egg/costco.
