Worth coming back for a player like me?
Worth coming back for a player like me?
I'm thinking about making a return to UO as I'm unemployed at the moment.
I was looking around some of the servers I used to play on and this was always my favourite due to the combination of solid GMs and real era accuracy. I still have my accounts with a couple of worthwhile chars (bardmage & dexxer that I could make some money with) minus the prime real estate I used to own near the Brit mining wall. So it wouldn't be too much of a chore to get on my feet again, but I have a question.
I'm basically your run of the mill casual player. I mince around doing silly things, exploring, gathering etc and I like to think people like me are an important part of the world. Who else do the PKs kill? The problem is, last time I played, people like me were in the minority. The server seemed to consist of people macroing in houses waiting for events to happen.
I'm not against macroing or anything, I did/do it myself, just it seems there was a severe lack of players actually out there enjoying the world for what it is, which is basically what I do. Most towns were deserted yet I'd see countless names appear in player houses as I ran along doing my thing.
Has anything changed on that front? I notice the numbers are down so I'm guessing the world is probably even more deserted than it was before. Would it be worth me coming back only to find myself bored and alone? Maybe there is a guild for casuals like me?

Come party with me.
I'm a loser who doesn't use magic on his dex warrior. I don't PvP yet, unless I have to and I don't play 10 hours a day.
Couldn't hurt to give it a run again.

I would consider myself a casual player as well, and I think that you could really enjoy yourself. For instance, when I want to hunt on my bard and make some cash, I can usually find a nice hunting spot that's not crowded. However, when I'm ready for some interaction, I hop around to Brit, Vesper, or guild towns. Also, finding a guild to hang out with helps you feel included and part of a social community. The uosa ventrillo is also a great way to find some action.
Recently, I've found pvping a very fun part of the game. In addition to regular server tournaments, there is almost always action in the field. I'm very excited to try the order/chaos experience because I hear there is never a dull moment in those guilds.
Also, a really cool part of this shard is that the housing market is not completely out of control. There are lots of small house spots unoccupied and when you're ready for a larger home, you can acquire one at an affordable price. Unlike servers such as UO Hybrid, where the population is larger and the housing market insanely overpriced, uosa is a place where you may not see a lot of townies, but at least you can work towards achievable goals on a casual schedule.
Anyways, this is just my experience with the shard as a casual player.

Yeah, more on Faber's point, I've only been here three months and I've got three smalls and a tower.
Granted, I've gotten inside pricing on a few, because of the guild I'm in, but that's how it goes.
I've also spent a lot of time crafting or hunting with my guildmates, to afford all this shit.

Alright guys, you've convinced me!
Will hop on IRC tomorrow and see if I can't find myself some people to play with. Just didn't want to be the lone casual in a world of leet pvpers chucking insults around. I'm getting too old for that shit now
And yeah, the housing was great when I played before. Placed my own house right next to the Brit mining wall a few tiles from the guard zone and had people offer me some quite nice money for it, then I just let it collapse. Also had a large patio house the other side of the wall that went idoc.

Don't join until you get a RL job again. If you join UOSA first, you WILL get addicted and lose your will to find a job

Seriously, I wouldn't spend as much time in UOSA and IRC if I wasn't at work when I'm doing it.
You'll rarely find me in IRC when I'm actually gaming it up at home.

The truly l33t UO players are the unemployed or students. Embrace it.
<@BoomlandJenkins> I got home, got on UO right away and I knew something was up before I even made it to the spawner, because there were 35+ in the Justice woods and not one person was PKing one another.
