way way way before t2a, except for a very brief tim in UO:R where you could get called on while running one of the four cardinal directions and escape.

Yep; I used to do the same thing pre T2A. It was fun to scare the newbie bank thieves =) I do remember seeing the rare bank thief running from a guard. The guard would teleport in, swing, and miss... the thief would start to run, guard would pursue, some other players would join in to gang up on him, and away they went off screen.

This was, however, quite rare... 99 times out of a 100 you died instantly. The only reason you'd see it infrequently was the fact that there were 100+ people at the bank and another 30 bank thieves swarming all over the place. There were so many bank thieves stealing stuff constantly that you'd actually see it happen now and then.
