Targetting spells on spells books etc, possible bug?
A while back we pointed out that many players would be able to cast spells on a book without effect, it was useful for gaining skill.
Now you can cast spells, and when you target lifebars very often mana will be used but no effect occurs.
Maybe its related to this change which occurred perhaps a year ago?

I have yet to have this happen to me. Are you sure they just aren't out of range?

yea it happens to me alot, usually at the most inconvenient times. i thought it was to do with clicking on party bars but its continued to happen since parties were removed. pretty sure its not to do with being out of range since mana wouldn't get used up in that situation.

Just about any item can be a target of a spell, a lot of people suggest crystal balls, but there is nothing special about them, they are just another item.
Mana in consumed on most spell failures or successes when a valid target is made, I'm not sure what you mean when you say target lifebars; you shouldn't be able to target lifebars out of range; but you can for example cast magic unlock on a player, you'll lose the mana and reagents, but the message is "that did not need to be unlocked"

he means prepping for example, an explosion, targetting another players health bar.... to no avail, (no spell gets casted, but the mana still drains) happened quite a few times to me as well, extremely cheesy bug.

Derrick, I'm assuming they are mainly talking about the more common spells like greater heal. This happens a lot out of random based on my experiences. However, my assumption was that it's always a mistarget by clicking a non-static item that is set on your last target mistakenly.
Also, Guerilla... The explosion spell is a terrible example for someone that isn't familiar with this issue since it can easily get confused with the accurate bug that does not allow the spell to be stacked with another explosion spell.

i dont use last target to target heals, i always click. on one occasion, i clicked on a teammates health bar twice in a row with a greater heal, both times mana was consumed and nothing happened. definitely was in range.

Re: Targetting spells on spells books etc, possible bug?
The same falls true with my targeting sequence for heals marm. The bug from my experiences is associated with only clicking on the actual bar(have not seen it happen when using last target) and is believed to be a client issue in my opinion. The bug mostly happens during a non-manual weapon dragging process for me using Razor.
This was happening a lot during a duel between Eulogy and me well over a year ago which was the last time I ever saw him play. Reproducing this bug was actually quite easy back when I was playing a lot over a year ago. I have kind of conditioned myself from allowing it to happen to me but it still does pop up sometimes.

side note; i tried to cast spells on a crystal ball to train magery on drax and it wouldn't allow me to target it..

Sandro, it worked fine for me... I set up a macro about a week ago to repeatedly flamestrike a crystal ball, and it worked perfectly.

i think for beneficial spells like invis etc, a static item is not a valid target. it works with all harmful spells to my knowledge.

If this is the case then why would mana be consumed when clicking lifebars?
What marm describes happens often enough for me. I once did a 2v2 with Guerilla, and he was redlined. I casted 2 gh's and targeted his lifebar. Mana was used, he did not get healed. Miracle that he survived.
Using the recommended client. I really do not want to rely on smart last target

try gh an item in game and see if that consumes mana, you can then rule it out if it doesn't consume mana. i don't think beneficial spells ever worked on static items on actual servers. if it does on UOSA, test it on demo and then derrick could remove it and perhaps fix the problemson wrote:nightshark wrote:i think for beneficial spells like invis etc, a static item is not a valid target. it works with all harmful spells to my knowledge.

it's a weird problem, i've never had it. i do recall having an issue with targeting lifebars by spam clicking though (on any server), but not the consumption of mana that goes with it. by any chance are you spam clicking the life bar pre-target?
