Pack Horse Issue

I have now gone through my 2nd packhorse in as many days. They just disappear after a certain period of time. I got him, fed him and then went off doing some stuff. I also went afk for about 3 minutes and when I came back he was gone. Now, did he go "poof"? I don't know but I do know he's not there anymore.

Is there something that can be done about this?

Edit: I logged in and logged out and now and he's back. Maybe this is just a bug?

That ceratinly is very strange. Tame animals can go wild, it's also possible that he was attacked by a player and was led off. They won't just be deleted though, even a tamed animal that goes wild will persist for quite a long time.

I've noticed that occasionally griefers will come by, cast gate, then cast explosion on your pet, and hop in gate before the spell actually kills the target.
